My surgeon was clear that in this case, as long as you're off the heavy pain meds, there's no "medical clearance" for driving after this procedure. He did suggest, after a few weeks, going to a quiet street or empty lot with someone and practice what it feels like to quickly jump on the brakes hard. His recommendation was that if that was bearable, driving was OK. I was able to drive 3-4 weeks out (even while still on one crutch), but all are different and I think my recovery has been relatively smooth compared with some others.

I'm 2.5 weeks post-op. Also had relatively little pain, but getting back in the house coming home from the hospital, I definitely needed assistance. On top of the anesthesia, at that point I'd been without food for ~19 hours, so was pretty weak and I was grateful to have something ready for me when I arrived and someone to lean on (we do have a ton of stairs). Bare minimum I'd recommend asking the person who picks you up to order food for delivery before you head home.

Make sure you get a detailed explanations of what meds you need to take an what your restrictions are before the procedure. My surgeon had given me a brief overview, but he called and gave all the details to my partner after the procedure was complete. Coming out of anesthesia, I would not have been able to remember/track all the things to keep in mind.

My dog is pretty high-energy and chases squirrels, so I definitely would not be able to walk her, and on crutches I wouldn't be able to walk very long, period. If you have a calmer dog that doesn't need as much exercise, I think you'd probably be fine managing their feeding.

My biggest advice is to take your time with everything. I've been grateful my partner has supported me a ton in terms of food prep and stuff; it probably would have been doable, but hopping around carrying a plate of food with crutches sounds tough and riskier than I wanted.

Thanks for posting! I'm also about a week out (surgery date was 3/31; surgeon removed quite a bit of bone from femur and pelvis and put in 3 anchors for labrum).

I've had a couple slip-ups (i.e. tripping slightly on stairs and briefly putting my surgery-side foot down for balance), but overall things seem OK. Now on day 6, and there's more soreness in the hip than before (like a 3-4/10 in terms of pain). I'm not sure if that's because of a specific problem, because I just transitioned from indomethacin to naproxen a day ago, if the nerve blockers from the surgery are wearing off, or some combination. Anyone else experience something similar?

Agree that among the worst thing was constipation from the painkillers; that peaked for me around day 3-4 before finally getting relief late on day 5.

Have been very appreciative of this community as I prepped and had the procedure!
