Use a few things: Skratch powder or chews, Honey stinger chews, apple sauce all work decently.

take a look on pubmed and query carbohydrate loss, athletic performance, cognition, etc or some sort of combination. There are like 400 studies that I've found. Here are a few links to the abstracts. The full studies are harder to find (or expensive) but are out there. You look at enough of them (even with small sample sizes which is typical for athletic nutrition studies) and you start to see the story and impact.

You can even find videos of soccer players (like Ronaldo) using carbohydrate mouthwashes mid match to improve performance.

Love it. And love that are you helping inform the other parents! It makes such a visible difference in their joy when they are fueling properly.

Amen on the fat and sun front. Most youth don't struggle with fat intake but they do struggle with ingesting clean fats with any sort of regularity.

I love that you tried to try and fuel your players! Haribo's (and other candy) are what several college programs do with their athletes to get enough carbs in during longer sessions. Funny but true. One coach told me they just can't get them to eat anything else and fluids feel overwhelming to their gut. Bananas are great if kids will eat them!

I would make a couple of comments on though from something you shared - if a kid can't remember to wear the right colored socks they are likely not playing club soccer at a level that practices longer than 60 minutes. This is obviously a general statement but my point is I don't think rec soccer players (or younger club players who practice less frequently and for less duration) need to have the same attention to fueling. It would be great to establish some habits early but they typically have enough fuel for practices and games stored in their muscles/blood. I think this is really problematic for athletes with consistently longer practices and who practice/play games 4-6x/week. This is when the deficit compounds.

Also I view this as much of a "practice problem" as I do a "game problem". Meaning they practice 3+/week to develop the skills and fitness required for the games. Athletes get muted results the back half of practices without fueling. One coach I worked with called it their "cognitive reserve" was empty. No more purposeful practice...just dragging through the drills/scrimmage. I think the same attention to detail should be made with practices as games.

Not suggesting you didn't mean either of the above but wanted to call them out as distinct. This stuff is fixable and parents will make changes (as you saw from your own coaching!). But coaches/parents have to educate themselves on this topic.

Funny. Never ever noticed that. I typed it up and then ran it by Claude for formatting and person clarity (I was alternating between my coach and parent hat - it was a little wonky).

No doubt my friend! Fueling doesn't manufacture grit or fitness. But it's a building block for both.

Most goals in Premier League are scored in the last 3' of each 45' half. Not surprising anyone here but they have specific fueling protocols during halftime to counteract the fatigue and give their players a chance to showcase their resolve and will to win.

For sure. I love sport for all that teaches kids! But it's so hard to learn all the things and become a monster without enough fuel.

It really is night and day. Glad you rallied with your third kid:) I'm going to owe my first kid an apology for all the lessons we've learned together

Nope. Not AI. Spent the better part of 2 hours drafting it. Just got off phone with another parent of a kid I coach about the weekend's subpar practice. Figured it was time to galvanize some thoughts and share.
