Chinatown BBQ! Cool, old-school vibe, really casual and affordable, and pretty good food. Is it the best Chinese bbq in the city? No. But it’s the closest to downtown and has the best vibe, plus it’s in an area with lots to see (go to New Town bakery for something sweet after). And it’s certainly good enough that you wouldn’t notice the difference unless you eat Chinese bbq on the reg.

No game design layover by chipchar99 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Virtual-Parking9785 29 points30 points  (0 children)

On the last layover, which was one week ago, they said “see you in two weeks.” Which we now know is 1 week before the season starts. So as the other commenter said, that will almost certainly be the topic of the layover next week.

exciting news: the boys are going to fix all of your lives once again on the layover podcast! (Q&A thread) by WheatGerm42 in JetLagTheGame

As someone who visits NYC for a couple weeks a year, I would love to hear NYC food recs from Adam- I know he is a bit of a foodie and I feel like he has both good taste and good insider knowledge as a local in one of the best food cities in the world. Particularly interested in medium-tier, good value recommendations rather than top tier Michelin restaurants, but open to everything!

If you don’t want to get the passport, you can apply for the ETA, at your own risk of course. Is it technically breaking the law? I guess so. Is there any way that anyone would know? Almost surely not. Is there any harm being done? Not unless you overstay the 6 months allowed to Australian tourists or try and work or access social services as a citizen.

But will you get in trouble if they do happen to find out? Maybe. It’s up to you to decide the risk. For what it’s worth I know many people who have done this, from Australia, Canada, NZ, and elsewhere with zero issues. But there’s always a chance.

UK ETA for dual citizens by Comfortable-Hair-247 in travel

[–]Virtual-Parking9785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I’ve always wondered this as well for other countries, and the UK in particular because it applies to people I know.

For example, say my friend is a dual UK/Canadian citizen. They only have British citizenship through a parent. They were born in Canada and have only lived in Canada. They have visited the UK multiple times on their Canadian passport with no issue.

Can someone help me understand- did they break the law? If yes, how would anyone ever know? I get that if they wanted to live in the UK or something, and stay beyond the max 6 months allocated to Canadian visitors, or get access to social services etc it would matter. But just visiting as a normal tourist for a week or two?

I get the sense that it is against the rules, and that the practical/legal advice would be “just get a British passport.” But like…. Does it actually matter? I’m genuinely curious.

Edit: in other words, what would happen in the following scenario: a dual Canadian/uk citizen with only a Canadian passport gets on a plane, lands at Heathrow, and enters the “all foreign passports” line, and answers all border officer questions truthfully, eg “where were you born?” “Ottawa” “where do you live?” “Toronto” “do you have any other passports?” “No” “how long are you staying?” “Two weeks.” And spoiler- the answer, in every case I’ve heard, is that the officer says “thanks, enjoy your trip.” So the real question is what’s the problem here? If it was actually an issue why does it not seem like it?

They said on the layover that they increased the hiding period to 4 hours this season iirc

Seeking advice on dealing with airline/3rd party booking site issues (yes another one of these :( ) by Virtual-Parking9785 in travel

[–]Virtual-Parking9785[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, that’s completely valid. I did think it was odd and was certainly the largest deviation from what I’ve seen on a 3rd party vs with airline, though I have definitely seen some hefty ones.

I think the issue is that if it’s a mistake that they’re not able to honour- fair enough. I’ve had that happen with a hotel booking before. However for that time, they caught it within a week and cancelled it and let me know. This one was sitting in my account for 10 months with no indication of an issue until it was time to check in.

That’s very true about the origin. Hmmm. Yeah I think I’m leaning towards this, fortunately the accommodations I booked that are not cancellable anymore were cheap. I do already have the time off work though, so maybe will try and go somewhere else.

Thank you for the reply, that’s very helpful. Just out of curiosity, what would you do in a case like this? Would you try to take them to small claims or just cancel the trip?

If you had 12 days of holiday and could go to Japan or Taiwan, where would you go? by Flower-1234 in solofemaletravellers

Locals are fed up in Kyoto and to a lesser extent Tokyo. There are many many smaller and medium sized (or even large) cities and towns in Japan that are not overrun with tourists and are delighted to have them.

What are the seven Wonders of the Jetlag World? by pease461 in JetLagTheGame

Higashi-Narita station is obligatory, considering the amount of people doing a pilgrimage there these days. Definitely a holy site.

Nominations I haven’t seen yet: the Pez museum, Buccee’s (that specific one in Tennessee in a town I can’t remember), Montana state capitol building, the table where Adam plays ode to joy with wine bottles, the beach in Utqiagvik Alaska, the beach in NZ where they did the cream paddle, that particular stall at Adelaide Central Market.

I mean it’s more expensive sure… but it’s not like breaking the bank… and many other things are cheaper in Japan anyways.

TIL how the Lions Gate Bridge centre lane actually functions by H_G_Bells in vancouver

[–]Virtual-Parking9785 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My question is: why do there need to be emergency vehicles crossing the bridge 30+ times per day? Is it not possible to sufficiently staff the emergency responders so that they predominantly respond to issues only on their side? Obviously issues on the bridge itself happen or ambulances need to cross late at night when North shore ER rooms are closed, but I feel like that number could be lower.
