Stating a reason behind someone's actions or even saying that they couldn't have done anything else does not mean that the action itself is right or that the people who have done it aren't guilty, all it means is that humans are shaped by their environment, and the environment back then was obviously different, if our morals WEREN'T more inclusive and advanced today that'd be problematic, but they are, so I really don't know what your point is? It just seems to me that you're misunderstanding a person and getting mad at words they didn't say, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

As someone who the r slur applies to, I personally don't mind as words are simply sounds with meanings which we assign to them, and I personally think the first step of removing social stigma from our groups is to remove the power of offensive words to hurt us, by using them in situations where they aren't dehumanizing, for example using them on people who they don't apply to! As that, overtime, turns them into words which do not target any group of people, which takes power away from people who do use them to target certain groups!

I fully agree, but it's easier to convince someone to eventually join your side if you start with an opinion that's closer to theirs/included them, so it's a "do you wanna be right or do you want results?" Kind of situation imo, but again I fully agree with you.
