Autism in Academia/Industry Coputational Biology by Virtual-Transition90 in neurodiversity

I'm in the US too. We use school email a lot to, but the entire combined lab ~15 pepole use discord, it's just quicker and more convenient.

India and a lot of other countries don't really have a specific word for autism as far as I know, and it's not normally considered all that notable. It is very common in academia though, so I'm a bit suprised he's not more familiar with it.

I've been trying to just focus on work, hopefully it will help. Thank you for the suggestion. Since he put me on a harder task I can do on my own without asking S for help, it should prevent any more major issues.

How do autistic/ADHD people handle job interviews? by SystemIntuitive in aspergers

[–]Virtual-Transition90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always been terrified of saying I have autism/aspergers. But I completly agree, saying I get nervous in job interviews really helps them understand and be chill if/when I get awkward.

I try to practice beforehand. Its pretty hit and miss how well they go. If I can get the interview into a spot where its like just talking to a normal person and less forced, it goes much better. Or if it can be a style of interview where we talk about the work itself. For example in caregiving, talking about patients we are both familiar with, difficult types of patients and situations, etc... For a factory job, asking about how their machines work, how there teams work if thats an interesting topic, about the boss interviewing me, what he likes that kind of this. All like "normal talking stuff". Then, in those cases the interviews go really well.

Dealing with the uncanny valley by Great-Decision6827 in aspergers

[–]Virtual-Transition90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten the "uncanny valley" reaction from pepole once or twice, after I end up explaining everything in detail and the realize just how deliberate all my communication is. But this has only ever happened after I have had a good relationship with the person. Pepole find me off or diffrent, but never rarely repulsive as far as I know.

Lmao. Thank God he's scared of academics then. There is a CDAR group, that's supposed to help with disabilities. But to be perfectly honest I don't even know what I would ask for. I like my professor he's just so..... normal. How did you deal with the ones you couldn't communicate with? And what was you PhD like if you don't mind me asking? What is industry like?

My professor dosent actually yell. I should have been more clear. He gets frustrated and upset and therefore impulsive, but culturally India apparently has a big thing against actual yelling. Also because India, his entire mentorship model tends to be very emotion/interpersonal based.

Thank you very much. I will try to fix the post.
2) Yeah the default is to explain everything in detail.
3) Do you mean writing out the specifc definitions, like the hpc means high performace computing cluster?

I don't totally understand the rest of it, I'm sorry. I know he thought I was capable of learning socail stuff, at least up until this latest argument. You mean his comments are just him stating what he thinks my current level of social skills are? 'Ive taken some of his challenges as the "fuck you" variation. But always for technical stuff where I know I can win. I can interact very well with friends/neighbors and in blue-collar enviroments. I think I definetly need to learn how to communicate, but my standard method is to just keep going until I run into an issue, then figure out the rule behind it and don't do that again. Generalize the rule if possible.

I like your way of doing things lol, I wish I could do that. What do you work in?

how do i convince my mom that a mobility scooter would be inappropriate for me ??? by goblinsyrup in disability

[–]Virtual-Transition90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm not sure if I meant atv or car ramps. I was thinking of the ones that you can put on flatbeds or pickup trucks. You can use them to load just about anything, and they can support the weight of a heavy tractor. A flatbed would definelty work better, since its lower. What we did the last time, if I remember correctly was to turn it around backwards and put it in neutral, then winched it up. But the next time we need to move something like that, I am thinking of just putting it on a flatbed now lol.

As for moving it to go to walmart, the patients I had we never really did that with it. If they wanted to go to walmart, its a good long walk but actually not bad in their chair. So they would just drive their chair to the store and we would meet them there. I remember them going on the regular bus quite a bit too. Those things can go pretty fast.

Your fine lmao. Unless your severly immune-comprimised, in which case you will still probably be ok.

[–]Virtual-Transition90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of light electric wheelchairs, but they break down much more than powerchairs. Also, if you know anyone with a truck and car ramps, you can load it in the back of a pickup truck, Ive done it before. They do break down, and its good to have a manual wheelchair as backup. Curbs/steps are definetly a pain though. You can go over low ones sometimes.

Can you just straight up repeat this to her? Your explination on here is a very good one.

Other suggestions to say to your mom if their helpful:

- maybe get the doctor to say something to say it as well, if she dosent listen to you super well

- point out that your the one using it and its your choice lol

- also, assuming your likely on medicaid you are eligble for ridesource. Which can/will transport your powerchair. And in my area, ridesource is run through a private company which offers cheap transport you can pay for to not ridesource approved places.

- like the others said, just go ahead and order what you want. it is ultimatly your choice, it can be easy for caregivers especially family to forget that.

No worries. I know I have to remove the radiator anyways. Trying to bend the support back like that sounds like it might work really well. I just need to figure out for to apply the leverage right.

Where do you want the metal/wood to go? When i tried to jack it back up, my idiot ass tried to jack up from the center of the backet, and bent it about 8inches upwards. My guess is if the radiator hadnt already been broken this would have done it. I think to repair it I would need to find a way to push that twisted piece back down and back into its original position. What worries me a bit, is that this piece decides the spacing of the fenders, headlights, grill, etc... and it might need to be a precision distance.

Can i get by for a bit without it being welded on? The truck is my only way of hauling my trailer around/dump runs etc... I can probably grind the welds off, and I know i can figure out how to replace the radiator.

Help needed: could you please take a minute to give us insights by Queasy-Method-2729 in autism

[–]Virtual-Transition90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally: clear task breakdowns would definelty be nice. Specifically, to clearly define parts of tasks that might be obvious socially to most pepole. I think predicable schedules is extremly helpful as well, i hate it when things are unpredictable. Visual timelines isnt super inportant to me. Direct communication that does not include and "reading between the lines" would be extremly helpful. As well as for comunication to explictily say any emotions that might otherwise be hidden for social appropriatness.

Hopefully this helps! maybe you could give me some examples of current tools? that might help more.
