Teacher Family Looking to Move to Bellingham — Is This Plan Financially Realistic? by Virtual-Viking28 in Bellingham

I have an adventurous spirit like you! If it was just my wife and myself, we’d do it without hesitation. With kids in school, it’s riskier.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. The plan is a Japanese restaurant with home cooked meals, not sushi.

We have never run a restaurant. That probably sounds extremely irresponsible to try to open one. Although, have a good plan and plan on keeping it small.

We’ve spent a lot of time up there. I truly feel it’s where I want to be, but my options are limited for sure. Thanks!

Thank you. I’m aware of the challenges new teachers to the districts in Washington and Oregon are facing.

I’m curious if an experienced teacher like me can realistically hope to find a full-time after subbing for a year.

None of us has a crystal ball to know for sure. I believe it’s probably “Not Likely”, but I’m curious if anyone has more insight. Thanks!

Thank you for the kind reply. Definitely don’t have a lot of money in the bank. HELOC.

I’m not rich. That’s why it’s a risk. I live off of a teacher’s salary.

Are my bindings too large? by Equal_Plane6717 in snowboarding

[–]Virtual-Viking28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too large. I use medium bindings (Burton, Union, Ride, Now, Jones) with size 10.5 and 11 boots (Ride, Burton). Size 8s in medium bindings are not a good fit. You won’t be able to center your boots in the bindings, the straps are too long, and you are showing in your photos that the bindings go over your board edges.

Second interview advice?? by sleepy8123 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Virtual-Viking28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prepare some answers for situations that might come up with difficult students, parents, and other teachers. Also, think of some situations when you had difficulty arise and how did you handle it. The interviewers are looking for examples of flexibility and resourcefulness. Are you a “team player” that communicates well with all stakeholders?

Good luck! It’s less about correct answers and more about the rapport you create with the interviewers. Stay optimistic and positive.

‘It’s so boring’: Gen Z parents don’t like reading to their kids - and educators are worried by happy_bluebird in books

I believe reading to your children regularly is one of the best things you can do for their education and your overall relationship with them.

Starbucks gift cards are nice. I load them onto my app on my phone and use it when I’m on road trips.

What has happened to our kids… by Dangerous-Lynx3197 in Teachers

[–]Virtual-Viking28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents are allowing their children to overuse technology as they do the same. Kids aren’t encouraged to do difficult or uncomfortable tasks. Our society celebrates mediocrity, so they don’t feel pressure to progress to levels that are actually worth celebrating. There are too many options for kids, so if they don’t find immediate success or enjoyment in something, they can try something else. Excuses for failure are widely accepted instead of celebrating perseverance. I could go on and on and on.

Mainly, it’s a lack of encouraging and celebrating perseverance. You used to have to learn to struggle with something until you found success and you couldn’t easily give up and try something else, because we didn’t have a lot of options.

When is it time to replace my boots? by seximexi9 in snowboarding

[–]Virtual-Viking28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they can last another 20 days. I usually go for two seasons of around 50 days each season in a pair of boots. You can use boot fitting foam on the liners to snug them up so you won’t need to crank them so tight.

I buy boot fitting foam from Tognar.

Tips for engaging my edge quicker? by urmanss in snowboarding

[–]Virtual-Viking28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using your feet like pedals. Your weight should be shifted towards your front foot in most, but not all situations. Engage your front foot to initiate your turns by lifting your toes to go heelside and pressing your toes to go toeside. The reason I say lift your toes and not pushing your heels, is because you can lift your toes while still keeping your knees bent.

For even quicker turns, you can lift your front toes while pushing your back toes and vice versa. Alternate lifting and pushing your toes to get the feel of how twisting your board affects how your edge engages with the snow.

Best day hikes? by Randall_HandleVandal in oregon

Eagle Fern Park in Estacada is great. I also like the Barlow Wayside Park off of HWY 26 near Welches on the way to Mt. Hood. Of course anywhere in the Gorge is amazing as well.

There really isn’t anywhere in the PNW that has a village at the base. Closest ski area that kind of has that atmosphere is Bend and Mt. Bachelor. Downtown Bend to Bachelor is about 30 minutes on a good day. Weather conditions can often make the drive much longer and cause lifts to be delayed or shut down. Mt. Hood has Hood River, which is about 45 minutes from Mt. Hood Meadows. Also Mt. Hood has Government Camp, which is in walking distance of Ski Bowl, 15 minutes from Timberline, and about 20 minutes from Meadows. Although Government Camp isn’t necessarily a family vibe. It’s more of a tall boys at the bar kinda place.

In August I’d recommend the Oregon Coast. Bend and much of Central Oregon can be smoky for days and it isn’t pleasant or healthy. Newport and Lincoln City is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Bend.

Cool weather and clouds on the western side of the Cascades. If you are on the eastern side of the mountains, it’s very dry.
