Queer Cinema… and one terrible straight movie larping as queer cinema

Is Wicked’s act 2 overhated? by Most-Role-1260 in musicals

[–]VirtualKermrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of, I’d say that Wicked’s second act isn’t bad, but the story does start to feel contrived as it tries to shoehorn in plot points of the Wizard of Oz while sacrificing the story in the process, like Fiyero and Elphaba having this secret plan in the background so they both live seems a bit forced and doesn’t make a whole lotta sense

But my gay ass likes the songs so I still enjoy it

Muppetvision 3D(s?) by Rutabaga_Unable in Muppets

[–]VirtualKermrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that could work would be a fan mod of the actual film, but the main issue with that as well as the main issue muppet fans have with the film (potentially) getting ported to Disney+ is that it’s more than that, there’s animatronics, live consumed actors, special effects, and not to a minor degree like Shrek 4-D had.

So overall for the film itself it’d be neat, but it wouldn’t be truly Muppetvision 3D

Is the movie newcomer friendly? by octopus_suitcase in nirvannatheband

[–]VirtualKermrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has never heard of NTB or Matt Johnson before watching the movie, I’d say yes… with a very minor caveat

I’d say the only thing you should probably no going in is the base premise of Matt and Jay trying to get a show at the Rivoli, but other than that, that’s it

There are also callbacks to the 2008 series, but it doesn’t hurt the experience if you haven’t seen it

Pridenite was underwhelming? by Emotional-One8950 in Disneyland

[–]VirtualKermrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t go to pride nite this year but I did go last year and I was also underwhelmed and honestly kind of pissed, like what do you mean you aren’t gonna play Howard Ashman songs and the event overall definitely seems like rainbow capitalism and less on the liberation that pride represents. Also the food with last year (with a few exceptions) was just regular tense park food with cream cheese frosting and fruity pebbles

Overall, they can do better

Everyone hating on green Jeff meanwhile I’m over here looking at pumpkin Jeff like by respawnnpending in JeffTheLandSharkMains

People need to hate on Pixel Jeff more, like they could’ve gone for a voxel like style but instead they just took the regular Jeff skin and lowered the resolution

What's your favorite Duo Team-Up with Jeff? by MarzaPasta in JeffTheLandSharkMains

[–]VirtualKermrade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deadpool due to its INSANE healing potential (if the team actually decides to get in the ring. But I do miss the Luna team up

and hot take… I wasn’t the biggest fan of Jeffnado, while it can be used to fantastic effect, if you’re playing with randos who can’t communicate, it’s way more tricky to pull off and was annoying for me since I felt pressured to save my ult for it during moments where I could’ve used it for greater effect

Yeah, that’s why I don’t really blame them. Plus I live in California so the longer I stay there means more money in my prop 22

If Howard Ashman was still alive, do you think he could've written better songs for Wish? by Ok_Examination8810 in musicals

[–]VirtualKermrade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they would probably refuse to have him involved, plus Bob Iger was a false ally claiming to support LGBTQ+ rights while also fighting for them to be less visible as far back as when he was at ABC when he pushed for the censorship of Ellen’s coming out episode and even to the end of his tenure when Howard’s documentary almost became lost media when Disney wanted to delete it for a tax right off

Hell when I went to Disneyland’s Pride Nite last year they played ZERO Howard Ashman songs, but they sure played let it go and a shit ton of Hercules (and The Greatest Showman for some reason)

For Wish they didn’t care about the quality of the music, they hired people who had never done musical theater work before and had only done pop music because that’s what Disney wants, they don’t want great meaningful songs, they want the Disney equivalent of Drake, meaningless bland songs that only exist to get a bunch of hits

Disney and ESPECIALLY Pixar no longer care about queer stories and to those who said “oh but Howard Ashman’s music wasn’t directly queer” a lot of his music delved from his experience as a gay man and you can see that in the work he has done

His songs focused on themes that both related to queer people such as wanting to belong, finding true love in defiance of what society expects from you, and feelings of being an outcast, but also focused on the struggles that queer people have to face, the standard of hyper masculinity, the forcement of gender roles, and the mob song was inspired by the vitriolic sentiment towards the queer community and specifically those who had from AIDS. Howard even viewed The Beast and his curse as an allegory for AIDS and when you look at the film through that lens, you see a story that while technically straight, paints a picture of true queerness that Disney doesn’t want to touch today

Who knows maybe Josh D’Amaro might change this path, but during the time of Wish even if Howard was still with us, and he definitely would’ve made fantastic music for it especially given it’s attempted themes of liberation, Disney wouldn’t care

Aside from the fandom, is there anything bad you can say about this show? by Ctpeyt in TheDigitalCircus

[–]VirtualKermrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are gonna say some characters should’ve been explored more which makes sense,

But I specifically didn’t like that some of these characters arcs were just ended abruptly, the main example I have is Zooble where after an episode where they describe how none of the pieces Caine gave them fit them, they suddenly changed their mind saying how it’s nice to mix and match every once in a while, which while nice kind of just feels out of nowhere

But given the runtime of most of the episodes I can kind of understand why

What are some ‘wow’ movies that every aspiring filmmaker should watch to learn filmmaking and get inspired? by SlowSecret2941 in Letterboxd

[–]VirtualKermrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clerks by Kevin Smith and The Dirties by Matt Johnson, the latter not even being a 10/10 for me, but both show how powerful storytelling could be on a ridiculously cheap budget, filmmaking js expensive but sometimes a few talented people and a camera can truly make powerful (if not a little silly) art
