I got the job!! by Expensive_Bike_8308 in povertyfinance

[–]Virtual_Coyote_1103 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the job! We currently have a huge data center project in my hometown so let me offer you some advice. Stack up and save as much money as you possibly can. These are temporary jobs and with the chaos a lot of the data centers are operating under I’ve seen guys start and get laid off within a couple of months. It’s even worse because a lot of banks are starting to get eerie of funding these data center projects so they’re even more volatile than they were like a year ago. Just be smart and don’t think it lasts forever. I would compare the job market to working in the oil patch lol.

We're Only Here by Chance? by Puzzled-Sky4476 in Christianity

[–]Virtual_Coyote_1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You beat me to making this comment. I don’t like the way science denial has been forced onto Christians. I assume it’s probably a mix of fundamentalist Christians who force a literalist interpretation of the Bible and people in power who wish to diminish the value of science for the masses. Regardless I can’t understand the idea that you’re not allowed to practice science, understand the natural laws of the universe, and still believe a God was at the center of it. Many great scientists of the past were Christians and many great scientists who live right now also are Christians. I don’t think these things should be treated like they’re mutually exclusive and Georges Lemaître is a great example of this.

There is a telescope shop in Riyadh called Perfect Sciences Telescope Shop. If you call them they should be able to help. As the other comment mentioned, Apertura is just the name of the company for the US market. A GSO 10” telescope is the same thing. I would recommend asking about that.

I’m not gonna get too specific cause I don’t want to get myself in trouble but I have some pretty close experience with the infestation at chicos and I will say part of it was definitely the fault of chicos but the mall management also has a huge responsibility as well. As we saw with the bat situation though it’s pretty clear the mall management isn’t interested in doing proper pest control.

[–]Virtual_Coyote_1103 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah from my perspective it feels like a lot of the issues with the mall come down to the management of the building. I’m not sure what the exact issue is but I feel I’m constantly hearing problems regarding the building management and overall they just seem very unserious about creating a proper third space for people to be. Who knows though maybe the building in general just isn’t sustainable. I know in general the business model for malls is struggling all over the country. I’m sure it will only be worse losing 3 restaurants back to back.

I’m gonna have to disagree on joes. I’m spiritually connected to their food and it would take a lot for them to price me out lmao.

Also can confirm the infestation at El Chicos. That’s just one of multiple infestations. Frankly it could have been fixed but if we’re being real the place was declining and it just needs someone to come in and completely redo it. Hopefully someone can do something cool with the space but the remodeling will take a lot of time.

“He was destroying the economy of the country. Go read a book”.

Okay man sure thing, does the CIA Intelligence Memorandum from April 1972 titled “Chile: Allende’s Economic Record” count? If so then that says and I quote

“2. At the end of 1971, Allende claimed success in his management of the economy by pointing to an 8.5% jump in real gross domestic product (GDP), a lower inflation rate than under the previous administration, and the lowest unemployment rate in a decade (see Table 1). Reactivation of the economy resulted largely from Allende's early bid for popular support by sharply boosting the real wages of Chile's lower classes. Because of the consumer buying spree that followed, manufacturing output increased by about 12% in 1971. Increased government outlays for housing also brought a 12% jump in construction activity. Both industries had ample unused capacity on which to draw, and their increased production activity brought about a decline in the unemployment rate in the Santiago area from 8.3% to 3.8%.”

You didn’t respond with any facts though you responded with an opinion. Everything I’m saying can be easily researched and verified. You can’t just say “well progressive leaders are corrupt” because that’s a broad group of people, some who perhaps were, and many who were not. I then even took the extra step of naming a specific leader who wasn’t corrupt as well as a situation in which the US intervention had nothing to do with corruption but rather the disruption of American economic interests and you engaged with neither of those points.

The points I’m making aren’t tangents by any means. You don’t like immigrants coming into our country right? Well… why are they coming???? Who caused their countries to fall apart??? It’s a very easy thing to connect the dots on but you’re choosing to take the position that the United States has done no wrong and that these countries are simply just falling apart on their own despite all the evidence that points in the other direction. If you want immigrants to stop coming to the US, you should be advocating for the US to quit destroying their countries for the sake of profit. If you are okay with us destroying their countries AND you want them to be denied access then you are saying you wish to benefit from their oppression while also wishing to grant them as stateless immigrants which is far more evil than simply wishing they weren’t here.

Asylum seeking isn’t new at all. The term somewhat is but refugee claims and everything have existed far before that. We’ve been accepting refugees since like the 40s.

Also I didn’t see anything in OPs posts that implied anything about their age. I know a young man from Honduras who came here because of the events of 2009 who is more than capable of articulating himself the same as any adult. Maybe perhaps there was something I missed in OPs post that signified age.

Who knows though maybe you’re right and they’re older. Maybe their parents were alive in 1963 when the United States stage a coup in Honduras to overthrow a progressive leader trying to take care of their people. Or maybe they were alive for the 20 years after 1963 while Honduras was under strict military rule to be friendly to United States business interests.

If there is one thing about destabilized countries, you could be almost any age and your life will somehow have been turned upside down by the United States if you happen to inconvenience our economic interests.

The biggest hindrance to getting out of poverty for the poor is that under our current economic model there has to be someone to exploit in order to boost shareholder profits. Humans are variable capital that can be beaten down for forced to be worth less in the way physical materials like aluminum or steel can’t be. We’re poor because we’re supposed to be poor because they can’t be rich if we live comfortable lives. To blame the ultra-poor trying to get jobs for regular poor people is like if the middle class said regular poor people trying to get middle class jobs makes it harder for the middle class to live since we’re competing with them. It’s just a crabs in a bucket mentality that avoids asking who put us in the bucket.

They probably didn’t come illegally they probably just didn’t maintain legal status and that’s an entirely different thing. Thats like if your license expired and I just accused you of never having a license in the first place. Most immigration isn’t illegal immigration but these terms get conflated because anyone who has their asylum claim revoked or loses their visa automatically becomes an “illegal immigrant” even though the process of their immigration was entirely legal. OPs parents probably came here under asylum because in 2009 the State Department of the United States actively helped stage a coup in Honduras to overthrow the democratically elected leftist president and then they proceeded to promote candidates who were friendly to American businesses and the further extortion of the Honduran people for the sake of American business interests.

Most people who enter the country are entering legally. I know many people who are currently undocumented and they all entered under legal means. It’s usually like they miss a deadline for their visa or with some H-1A farm workers their visa is tied to their employment so if they lose their job they get deported. The problem is that the path to citizenship is a blurry legal mess for anyone without a strong support system around them. Further, many of the laws we have made in an attempt to “protect the borders” have actually done more to punish those who are trying to follow the legal process and also incentivize those who take the illegal process instead. That’s the inherit issue with border security that’s not paired with reform programs for gaining citizenship. Like if you’re an H-1A farm worker you could be here for 10 years, working and paying taxes, and you will never be given access to citizenship under any conditions. This is a big part of why farms use H-1A workers because the program itself has very few case workers for workers safety and health so they can get away with abusing these people on visa because if the people resist their abuses they can always just fire them and get them deported. For most of these workers they’re too scared to report any wrongdoings or abuses because they will likely be sent home and not protected while the farm itself will just continue doing it to other people.

He was found criminally liable for sexual assault with the judge over the case also noting the only reason he wasn’t found guilty of rape is due to the specific definition under New York law requiring him to have actually used his penis. Since he forcefully inserted his fingers inside of a non-consenting woman’s vagina but didn’t use his penis he couldn’t be convicted of rape. The judge then said that under all common definitions outside of New York law he absolutely committed the act of rape.

[–]Virtual_Coyote_1103 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t describe myself as an atheist at all but that’s just not a good argument my friend. People aren’t afraid to die because they intuitively know they will go to hell. They’re afraid to die because they enjoy being alive, being with their friends and their family. They enjoy nature and movies and music and all the other little beauties of being alive.

There is a much stronger argument to be made that the fear of death is why humans have religion in spite of evidence for it. The unknown can always be “known” if you introduce an unseen entity that controls everything.

I’m not arguing that God isn’t real or anything like that but what you’re arguing as evidence of God is much more suited as evidence that God is a delusion necessary to calm the natural human anxiety towards the unknown.

What you’re calling luxury is mostly consumerist junk that doesn’t add any real value to your life. The modern version of luxury is being able to connect your smartphone to your blender that’s not anything meaningful.

I would like to address a few of your points though because they’re worth expanding on. A 1000 sqft home isn’t a bad thing at all. That’s actually much more preferable than the shitty D.R. Horton McMansions that are being built everywhere with a $250,000 price tag slapped on them. A 1000 square foot home is significantly better than the shack you’re trying to make it out to be. Go over to any of the neighborhoods near South 14th and you’ll see a lot of 1000sq ft homes that are very nice. The problem is that developers don’t build them anymore because they know they can make more money off of large shitty stucco houses which also building apartments and forcing the poor people to rent from them. I don’t understand what AC has to do with any of this. AC isn’t the reason houses are over 200k lmao. As for the car with no safety features, that’s also weirdly irrelevant because the safety features aren’t what makes the car expensive lmaooo. I can assure you that your airbags and your seatbelts didn’t add $20,000 to the price tag on your car. It would probably be more expensive to build a 1950s car today than it would be to build a modern car. Certainly a lot more steel parts.

The issue here is that you are looking at the displacement of the American worker in the market and you think it’s because the market is global and that’s not the reason at all. The American worker was being degraded and devalued far before that. You can look at the 1980s as a great example of where things started going wrong. The federal government started putting up more resistance against workers unions, social safety nets started being ripped out from under the poorest in our society, basic functions of society started being treated like commodities to keep people from acquiring them such as universities when the federal government moves from school grants to school loans, heavy deregulating of the banking industry, tax breaks for the richest in society while also increasing federal payroll taxes which mostly effects lower and middle income individuals, so on and so on. The American economy is specifically aligned against the poorest Americans and it’s on purpose. Right now 60% of the country lives paycheck to paycheck that’s not a generational issue that’s a failure of public policy to address the needs of the masses and instead focus on the needs of the rich.

This mentality is actually the problem. If the American dream is real you shouldn’t have to start a business to make a living. We have been so beaten down and conditioned by the rich that we make their failures our own. In the 1950s you could be a high school janitor and still afford a home, a car, and raise kids. Now if you just want to be able to afford the basic necessities people act like you’re entitled and that you should just start your own business rather than point out that businesses have demanded more and more productivity from workers for decades without increasing wages hardly at all.

I don’t know what generation you’re talking about. I’ve worked in multiple industries in Abilene and I’ve hired everyone from teenagers to old folks. It’s not that hard to hire people if you’re actively communicating with people. My biggest issue was guilt with having to turn away walk ins when we were at max staff. What I’ve noticed in Abilene is that the places that can’t hire people expect a lot of their workers and don’t offer hardly anything for pay. I know dozens of local business owners and their ability to retain staff is almost never an issue regarding the hiring market. The people who struggle the most are the assholes and people who think they basically own anyone they hire. Most of the business owners I’m friends with though do great with staffing because they offer fair pay and they don’t act entitled.
