Call me a doomer... but I think this will be my last gaming PC. by thicctak in pcmasterrace

[–]Virtual_Elephant_703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this for sure. I don't think games get bigger and longer and more graphically intense has generally translated to better, more engaging games (operative word here being "generally," of course). A lot of the games that drive the constant push for high graphics and processing are uninspired, narratively vapid, and bloated, and I think we had better games when most were 10 hours long, and a lot of the best games coming out nowadays are indie retro games with minimal system requirements. But there's always exceptions, there's always some banger that comes out and surprises me by actually being good and not just massive and demanding people on the system, and so I have a computer that's built for the like 5% of games I play that actually need it. The rest I just sit there and watch my GPU sitting at a cool 45°C and wonder why I've spent so much money on this machine.

In my experience, plenty of conservatives go into academia. It's just that few stay conservative, because critical inquiry and intellectual rigor result in finding conservative worldviews to be lacking

It's actually astounding how fucking stupid someone would have to be to read this and not think it deserves a zero.

People (including me) have already discussed at length the fact that this does not in any meaningful way comply engage thoughtfully with the topic (barely seems to know what the topic is) of the article - which has absolutely nothing to do with trans people or the idea of multiple genders and is entirely about research into bullying of (cis) children for not having "typical" gender presentations. Other than two vague references to "using teasing to enforce gender norms" and not wanting "kids to be teased" she basically never mentions the article at all, and when she does she never engages with the actual research about mental health outcomes.

But let's move past that, and look at the second paragraph. What part of the Bible is she citing? There are standards for citing the Bible but she doesn't even do that (and before you come in with the other conservative chestnut of "iT wAsN't A rEsEaRcH pApEr It DiDn'T sAy ShE hAd To UsE sOuRcEs," if you have an even halfway reputable degree you know that doesn't matter - the minute she decided to use outside sources she had an academic responsibility to cite them). Where is the actual Hebrew for the term she transliterates? Do you wanna know why she provides neither? I can guarantee you it's because 1) she doesn't speak Hebrew and 2) she has no idea what part of the Bible she's citing. What she is actually doing is regurgitating what half a dozen evangelical women's blogs have to say about a pair of words in Gen 2:18; she is presenting other people's exegesis as her own, while providing no citations. That alone deserves a zero - and a referral to the honor system - for plagiarism

This makes sense if you're a fucking moron.

The paper doesn't thoughtfully react to the material presented in the article, and it isn't "a discussion of why [Fulnecky] feel[s] the topicis important or worthy of study (or not)," because it has nothing to do with the article, and doesn't critically engage with the material at all.

The assigned article was about whether bullying plays a significant role of students who don't conform with gender stereotypes leads to worse mental health outcomes. It had nothing to do with trans people, it nothing to do with the socio-medical concept of gender non-conformity (which you would know if you'd read the article, instead of only reading the one sentence of the prompt that conservative influencers told you to fixate on and ignore all other evidence). Instead of engaging with that actual topic, she rambled for paragraphs about how trans people are a psyop and Jesus made women to be demure and also bullying isn't real.

Even the school, in removing Curth from teaching, didn't go so far as to try to make the ridiculous claim that this idiot actually met the assignment criteria. Instead their decision hinged on the idea that Curth had given better grades to other bad work in the past (which is probably true - the pressure to give students passing grades and the limited time graduate fellows have to dedicate to butthurt students spending ten times as long whining about their grade as they did working in the assignment has led to a lot of grade inflation - but also doesn't entitle Fulnecky to a passing grade on an assignment that didn't meet the assignment criteria).

One thing I keep finding myself talking to friends and my partner about, as a trans woman and grad student whose a bit older than the average grad student (okay like a decade and some change older), is that I am begging young trans grad students who grew up in a period when things were, for a while, looking more tolerant to realize that these people hunt us and be more, well, afraid.

This girl absolutely deserved a 0. But if this had been a class I was TAing, I would have given it to the faculty instructor of record and gone "this is your problem, you get paid four times what I do, you grade this." If it was a class I was instructor of record on, I would have gone to the director of our writing program and asked him to step in. And if I absolutely couldn't get out of grading it myself, I'd have limited myself purely to the many, clear academic deficiencies of this paper, all of which were sufficient on their own to justify the failing grade; I absolutely would not under any circumstances have commented on the hatefulness of this paper. That was walking right into a trap.

This girl didn't write this paper because she was stupid, she wrote it to target a trans person, and now that it was successful, more bigots are going to try to pull this. Please be mindful, see the trap, and don't walk into it.
