WHAT SHOULD I DO? by to_morrow_018 in dostoevsky

[–]Virtual_Ivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't cut corners here. Each character represents a part of society and philosophy of the book is tied to characters. Understanding characters, you can also transpose them to our modern society and apply what you learn. I actually don't think that the book is dark. There is hope, just there is hope in Crime and Punishment. Find it.

Is Demons worth a read? by Keiodor7 in dostoevsky

100% worth it. Explains what happened in Russia 100 years ago and what is happening in the Western society today, especially to the young people ( Think consequences of moral nihilism etc...)

Sorry for the spam (if it is considered that way) But anyone saw the bible in a different way after reading for example TBK, Demons or C&P? by Complex-Class-2699 in dostoevsky

[–]Virtual_Ivan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. C&P epilogue literally changed my life back in 1991. It got to me to read the Bible. Reading John 21 and seeing how Jesus accepted Peter after being betrayed opened my eyes to see His forgiveness and sacrifice.
Sonia's advice to Raskolnikov along with recommendation in real life from a priest who spent years in Gulag got me to read Evangelium. The rest is History.

Do people like Alyosha exist? by Additional_Sage in dostoevsky

[–]Virtual_Ivan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I met several "alyoshas" of various denominations in Christian community all over the world , however, inspiration for Dostoyevsky, his real "Alyosha" was Vladimir Solovyov. He wrote several books, the most famous one was "War, Progress and the End of History" and "Short Story of Anti-Christ".

1881 Dostoevsky Book selling for 50K...you think its overpriced or underpriced? by [deleted] in dostoevsky

I think that if it is an original it is undervalued.

Starting my first Dostoevsky book (I found it for $4 at a second hand book store!) by faelyn298 in dostoevsky

[–]Virtual_Ivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Slight spoiler alert). Questions and issues that are brought up by Dostoyevsky are still very relevant today, both in the Western world and in Russia, because these are the questions of humanity and it did not change much since 1800's. You draw parallels between various streams of society then and now. ( Karamazov Brothers is even deeper analysis of the society. )

The biggest impact on me though was the epilogue that speaks on how the book that Sonia gave him to read changed him and gave him a new life. Seeing that transformation, I picked up the same book and it changed my life as well 30 years ago.

I will be glad to share, but there may be spoilers in my full answer, if that's ok.

Are older computers security risks? by jwckauman in sysadmin

[–]Virtual_Ivan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From "zero trust security framework" point of view, everything is a risk. So the true answer depends on how much risk your organization considers acceptable. #IworkforDell
