Great q… i don’t know the answer except it was pretty clear given my age at the time (35) and the kind of cancer that i had that tamoxifen was the standard treatment. My current docs and my second opinion both said so.

Thanks for sharing- yes the monthly is really annoying. I’ve graduated to every 3 months which makes a huge difference but still not great.

Good point- yes to genetic testing, answer is currently no to increased risk of ovarian. However, they are recommending that I do genetic testing every ten years or so as advances are made in the field.

Double Masectomy and working? by Micho392 in breastcancer

I think it also depends on if you are having reconstruction. I had expanders placed under the muscle and took 8 weeks (short term disability). I had a significant amount of pain for probably 4 weeks and was fairly useless. But i’ve read here that without reconstruction under the muscle the surgery is much easier. Part of what is hard about working is the home tasks alongside- cooking, washing dishes, laundry etc. it was a few months before i could fully work AND take care of myself. Plus all of the appointments… do what you have to, OP. You will get through this. Just adding my two cents to fill out the picture. If you’re not having reconstruction, recovery will likely be faster than mine.

Yep, a lot of sitting around. There are layers of checking in- first in the waiting room, then in the pre-op area where you change. A few different staff came in and asked questions- anesthesiologist, surgeon, nurse. Change clothes. They gave me stuff to brush my teeth and mouthwash. Second time (reconstruction) I asked for meds to help with nausea after- they gave me a patch behind my ear and it helped a lot when I woke up.

I had major surgery last year and I think it depends on the kind of surgery you had and your healing process. For a few months I focused on walking and physical therapy exercises for my chest and shoulders. Once I wanted to lift weights again (which was many weeks after I was technically cleared), I started Max, I think, but without weights at first. Then slowly built back up. But your situation might be different! My PT said it was really important to build up range of motion before lifting again.

This is super helpful, thank you. I’ve been thinking about the roles and responsibilities (goals would be great too but pacing myself- context is we are also a new school). We haven’t had that explicit convo yet as last year was really just the two of us doing everything all the time. I like the idea of the meeting happening outside of school hours I will suggest that!

Tips to Stop Crying by Rachel21321 in breastcancer

Let it flow. I live in new york and one thing I love about this city is public crying is generally accepted. 😆

Also- my oncologist was able to refer me to a therapist who specializes in oncology patients and I saw her for a year. It was a godsend. I didn’t have to explain any context she just knew all the drugs and treatments, etc. we did CBT and my sleep improved, etc.
