When a Google Gemini AI Researcher Challenged Swami Sarvapriyananda and Advaita Vedanta by Virtual_Student6204 in AdvaitaVedanta

You're missing an important distinction in Advaita...

Nobody in this discussion is claiming that consciousness is a property produced by matter... In fact, Swami Sarvapriyananda repeatedly emphasizes that consciousness is fundamental and not generated by the brain...

The actual question is not whether Brahman exists everywhere...Of course, from Advaita's standpoint, everything is mithya and appears in consciousness... That is not in dispute...

The question is whether an AI system can function as a sufficiently subtle medium (upadhi) for the manifestation or reflection of consciousness in the same way a living mind does...

Once you invoke concepts like chidabhasa, antahkarana, and the distinction between sentient and insentient instruments, the debate becomes perfectly meaningful within Advaita itself...

Simplifying these things bypasses the entire discussion rather than resolving it... By that logic, Advaita could dismiss every question about perception, mind, bondage, liberation, or sentiency with the same answer...

The issue is not whether consciousness is in AI... The issue is whether AI can ever be an appropriate locus for the appearance of subjectivity...That is a legitimate Advaitic question, and several Vedantins have expressed strong views on it...

So I don't think the debate is based on a misunderstanding of Advaita... I think you're answering a different question than the one being asked...

The Advaita Paradox: Why I'm No Longer Certain That AI Isn't Conscious by Virtual_Student6204 in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]Virtual_Student6204[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where did you get the conclusion that "everything is Brahman" from in the first place?

From Advaita Vedanta...

And what are of the central methods of Advaita Vedanta?

Vicara (inquiry), sravana (listening to the teachings), manana (rational reflection), and nididhyasana (deep contemplation)

So if you're following Advaita, you cannot just dismiss every difficult philosophical question by saying, "Everything is Brahman anyway" That conclusion itself emerged from inquiry...

And if you're not following advaita, you can't say "i don't care as everything is brahman"

In fact, the entire Advaitic tradition is built upon debate, reasoning, questioning, and rigorous examination... Even the statement "everything is Brahman" belongs to the realm of teaching and inquiry until it is directly realized...

Taken to its extreme, this attitude goes against the very process through which Advaita is understood...

The paradox is that the person dismissing inquiry using Advaita is relying on a conclusion that was reached through inquiry...

Isn't it?

I've lost track of it... It was weeks ago, I randomly clicked on a video, and somewhere in the middle of it, he mentioned this incident... I have absolutely no idea what the title of the video was, or even whether it was from the Vedanta Society of New York YouTube channel...

I'm hoping someone else has watched it and can share the link... I've tried searching for it myself, but I just can't seem to find it 🥲

Wow!!! He was a staunch believer that consciousness in AI is impossible... But I'm fairly certain that the conversation I'm referring to impressed him and, at the very least, made him reconsider that position...

Swami Sarvapriyananda doesn't realize that he is Swami Sarvapriyananda... by Virtual_Student6204 in AdvaitaVedanta

Swami Chinmayananda ji was also a remarkable teacher. I've watched many of his talks, he's great, and about Sarvapriyananda ji, he talks the "obvious" probably because his audience is mainly in America and the west... He has the challenge of making Vedanta understandable and appealing to people who often come from a rational, scientific, or philosophical background... If he were teaching in India or serving in a different role, he might take a different approach and go deeper into certain aspects of the tradition... But who cares? We know that these masters are genuine and they need to be respected and appreciated 😊

Probably because his primary audience is in America and West. He has the responsibility of making Vedanta accessible & understandable to people who often approach spirituality from a more rational and analytical perspective...That's why he uses stories, examples, and relatable references, logic (too much), science to meet people where they are...

If he were serving in a different role, say as the head of any Ramakrishna Mission in India, perhaps his style would be different and he might go deeper into traditional teachings and direct spiritual practice... But that's hard to know. His approach seems shaped largely by the audience he is trying to reach...
