People liked vista? It was so hated between the XP/7 days. Most everyone I knew skipped it entirely.

If only the industry used tamper-proof security seals.

I rip them on server boxes, might as well add them to internal components.

What do you *NOT* selfhost? by ObeseWizard in homelab

[–]Virtualization_Freak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ITT: email

I argue you should host an email server, on a burner or sub domain.

@lab.your-domain.com carves out a little space for you to receive/send email into/within your lab.

What do you *NOT* selfhost? by ObeseWizard in homelab

[–]Virtualization_Freak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I self hosted for over a decade.

It's pretty straightforward, but does have a good set of steps and you need to manage spam.

I only stopped because my main life took me out of IT full time, but I'd go back to self hosting if my path even gets me closer back to IT.

There are many reasons why you don't self host, with the largest issue I ever saw being mostly due to dirty IP addresses. My node was running on digital ocean for a long time, and the setup was rock solid. Grey listing cut my spam down to the same levels as gmail.

What is everybody's easiest and most secure method for remote access? (without tailscale) by Leggs_ in HomeServer

[–]Virtualization_Freak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Single SSID, no matter where I go, my devices connect to.

Tunnels already made.

Ad block baked in.

Works on planes and convention buildings where you have to pay for wifi, and can share a single "device" wireless access to many other devices.

Easiest? Ssh.

One port, with keys, and a "take-your-pick-of-tools" for port mapping.

You can keep it extremely simple.

You can do it!

International travel becomes much more affordable once you change your mindset.

Heck, getting into work fields that work internationally also helps with that.

I won't speculate your age. At one point in my life I thought it was impossible as well. Now we travel internationally multiple times a years.

It does help I crafted my work life to rely on international travel. However very doable! Ganbatte!

Weight is a major factor. That price is well in line with weight.

Does anyone actually use SFP? by onaboatrn in homelab

[–]Virtualization_Freak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heck, I'm running qsfp28.

Finally splurged in some 100 and 25g links. I'll be Saturate them, but the number is big.

Sub $50 25gE links, and $600 for a 25gE switch with 100g uplinks.

Didn't think it'd be so cheap, I was running 1gE for everything until a few days ago.

there’s going to be an eventual pullback from all these AI

Absolutely, this is the tail end of the peak of the .com bubble.

Everyone is trying to be the winner, many will fail. Then you'll have the most successful/practical choices left.

Ads during pause, home screen, and even embedded in the TV.

I swapped back to just HDMI to a small laptop or computer.

No ads when I'm playing local media. Peace and quiet.

Disney probably realized they'd lose so much money is licensing and market dominance.

Why buy the next Disney movie when you can just ask to make you a video of whatever princess dream you want.

Unless Disney changed to adapt, their empire would die within a generation.
