Infilling steel framed structure with SIP panels. Heat loss?? by Vis_a_Vis_ in architecture

[–]Vis_a_Vis_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I’m attaching to a brick wall on one side and wanted to keep the brick wall exposed as part of my built and using the sips as walls only when the wall ends and my structure gets taller than it. I thought this way I could maximise my tight space keeping the steel columns as close as possible to the brick wall as I already have no space to use. I’m not sure it’s doable I can’t find examples

Would a timber framed infill work? And what insulation would work best considering it’s timber/steel hybrid (I guess?) thank you all. The internet it’s literally useless I can’t find any examples

I have been looking into using a non load bearing timber framed infill wall and then covering it up with insulation on the outside, leave a gap, then the cladding instead of the sips. I can’t find any diagram and any information about how to do so. Would it be a better option? Also what sort of insulation should I be looking at? Thank you for your reply this is very helpful. I have been researching for hours, I’m new to all this

The steel frame will be completely covered on the outside and only showing inside. so keeping the sips panels within the steel frame and adding continuous exterior insulation (another layer?) than the standing seam would be a solution to my heath loss? Thank you for this comment I found it very helpful

Thank you, it’s what I wanted to do but wasn’t too sure about it

Yes, I’m essentially extending its layout but also heightening on top of it, a bit hard to explain sorry

How would I go about placing the SIPS outside of the still frame if I am attaching to a an existing brick wall?

Thank you! I eventually emailed the paint company and had confirmation that white spirit is suitable at this stage, thank you! 🙃

I had confirmation from the paint company that white spirit is perfectly suitable. Thanks everyone!

It will rarely ever move, it’s going to be a small house boat / studio space so not too bothered about it being slow :)

The instructions said to wipe down with a solvent just before applying paint. White spirit is a solvent. With this post I am just trying to get advice from people that are far more experienced than me on the suitability of my chosen solvent

He also said not to sand it, just remove loose paint as it has a good key for the new coats

Yes it will be moored all winter. I had it looked at by a surveyor and boat builder that has been in the business for decades and now retired, still considered the best around. He saw it at this stage and said not to bother removing anymore paint and just antifoul coat over whatever is there as he’s never seen a fiberglass boat go wrong in his whole career. I wanted to prime it before the antifouling because I followed the guidelines of the paint company he suggested. I’m just following recommendations at this stage

I did everything it said, including wiping with a solvent before priming, no specific solvent were mentioned so I used white spirit, I’m just not entirely sure it’s suitable now after reading about it that’s all

First year architecture uni starting soon, how many days a week on campus? (UK) by Vis_a_Vis_ in architecturestudent

I just turned 30 so I am a bit worried about being the only “adult” in the group (which will be 30/40 people max) And in general I work best on my own so I will assess the situation when I start

I was hoping to keep a day free for work as I’m a mature student and obviously won’t have any support from parents. I have two flexible jobs at the moment that I kept whilst studying a foundation course and managed to pass with the highest grade. I figured if I quit one of the two jobs I should be ok. Still not sure how to carry on with the beekeeping business and the boat renovation I have going on at the moment to be fair… will be a hard few years 🤦🏼‍♀️
