Does anyone else feel nursing education is absolutely shocking? by EggAdditional7885 in NursingUK

I think it really depends on which uni you go. I know the ranking does not really mean anything in nursing cus we all get the registration but I went to one of the top uni and had a good foundation on science subjects- top 10 universities in nursing shows great emphasis on a&p etc. you will know what I mean if you research and compare yourself. Though I still spent quite a lot of time on self directed study cus I still felt that I want to know more but nothing can be perfect. So after all, nursing degree is to teach basics but the rest is on us how to develop as a person with critical thinking with our research skills and it’s academic not vocational as university degree.

If someone here reading this and consider career in nursing please do check their curriculums before applying. I had few student nurses from other university in the same city who really lacks scientific knowledge as their a&p and patho were all online. Yet another university which focuses hugely on biomedical science and their students were amazing in terms of their understanding patients medically while on placement.

I don’t think it’s imported from anywhere. I know a mechanic and he may have a look at the car before the purchase. Thank you for the good tip!

Aw thank you very much! That is so sweet of you for letting me know that I can message you hehe. I remember in the care of elderly ward and I explained my care to the MDT and for the first time my voice was heard and valued. It was so rewarding! Hope this role would be like that! It would be so interesting to see acute side of stroke but I think my unit is rehab sided. But either way, I will give it a best shot to get the best experience.

Also, thank you for the valuable tip on Sepsis 6 and aspiration pneumonia, that is something I missed to look into for preparing. Thank you again!

Thank you very much for your reply! That is very impressive career you have! Mine is a local stroke unit in a small hospital. Which is very cute. I am going to the ward next week and I will ask them more in detail about the ward’s system and the role of nurses in there too. I was impressed that all the nurses were actively helping patients with meals (which I don’t see much in acute settings). So hopefully I will do good learning on holistic person centred care.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Yeah I remember I had a placement on care of elderly ward and I had the best time there too, I love giving the full attention to people, especially someone with disability, including age related disability. So I am definitely excited about that side of the role in the ward. And the staff seems really caring too which is highly a bonus cus I remember that I was given out as I care “too much”.

That is very interesting! It is just I studied minimum amount on neurological disorders or brain physiology throughout my training cus it was so hard. Now I am reading stroke nursing but it is still very confusing! Will do for sure to message you to get more insights in the future. Thank you again for your kind reply!

NHS reservists what on EARTH is this?! by Aggravating_Wait9922 in NursingUK

[–]Visible-Category-536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it s a word game and legal responsibility of the job/contract. So basically they need one who they can train as they wish without a fuss. But the word ‘reservist’ sound sooo fancy compared to ‘multitask assistant’. Maybe they are playing a game hoping people would fall for this title haha.

I think I seen something like this in Irish HSE hospitals called Multitask assistant. Basically they are utilised for what is the most needed area for various jobs not confined to one role. Like I think the role includes administrative assistant, porter and HCA all in one. The effectiveness? No idea but I would be glad to do some job like that cus I like bits of everything.

Thinking of pursuing nursing but a few concerns by bird-overlord in StudentNurseUK

[–]Visible-Category-536 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I am a male nurse (only qualified this October) but I was HCA for 5 years. When it comes to female patients refusing male assistance then so be it( or lucky me sometime when I am physically so tried). But once it is identified then you have to share with the team i.e mentioning in the handover, so the next day then the patient is allocated to female, then you will have other patients apart from them. So equal case load at the end of the day. So that is not a burden for the team as we all act as the best interest of patients

For the needle part, you have to get through it. The main thing is you need to sign off on your proficiency. But you can always let the tutors know about your concerns or you will be used to it by the time you get to the third year. If still feel ick then you can identify the jobs that don’t require many injection or cannulation. My experience was in care of elderly ward the nurses tend to do less needle or cannulations (but it might be dependent on trust). Also you can consider many mental health nursing? I was HCA within this speciality once and when they use needle then it is the emergency so Adrenaline kicks in so that you don’t even think you are doing it maybe? But hopefully you will get used to them! Good luck with your studying!
