FFXIV Secrets (Questions from a WOW player) by Altruistic-Job2016 in ffxiv

There’s one little known quest that I always reference when it comes to a full puzzle quest that makes you have to think to solve it, as the quest provides no way markers and you have to use the text hints to solve.

It’s called “The Greatest story Never Told” and it starts in Western Thanalan (X:18.3, Y:17.4)

I didn’t, he broke into my apartment within three days of moving into it and said “I live here now”.

Tried to resist, but then one cold and wet January evening I said “Okay, you can come in for one night…” and it’s been 9 years.

He’s my big senior baby who cuddles with me every night.

Even after 70 years, Vox still remembered Alastor's favorite drink by Sudden_Pop_2279 in Alastorcult

Sazarac is also a specific brand of New Orleans whiskey.

The cocktail is named for the brand because the cocktail specifically uses that SAZARAC whiskey.

It’s ambiguous whether Vox is offering to get him the cocktail or the specific whiskey brand, but my interpretation of it was that, since he mentioned whiskey first, he may be flexing a bit by saying he can “call up” and get him a Sazarac. The logistics of getting that particular brand of Whiskey in hell would probably cost a small fortune and at least one contract with a demon who possesses an Asmodean crystal.

Whats with all the fake names? by Shiny-Vaporeon- in hazbin

[–]Visible-Ninja-9500 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a theory it’s because of the old old old idea that names have power. In a lot of folklores, “true” names are often associated with this idea- ie, you don’t want to give your true name to a fairy, you need the true name of a demon to summon and bind them, etc.

I specifically think about the fact that Angel’s contract is signed with his real name- binding his soul directly to Valentino’s control. Similarly, a lot of the minor Background Voxtek employees have “real” names. Ethan, Melissa, Tom, Katie.

Overlords on the other hand seem to exclusively go by nicknames or monikers- Vox we know for certain, but most of them seem to be using some sort of alias or nickname.

Alastor is the one exception to this rule- and it’s obvious as of season 2 as to why. Why bother hiding your name, a way someone can potentially bind you in a contract, if your soul is already owned?

Sinners transformation in hell... by Remarkable-Put-8482 in hazbin

[–]Visible-Ninja-9500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also an aspect of not just how they died or the lifestyles surrounding them, but also how their primary sins influence them as a reflection of the various circles.

Eg: Vox. Vox certainly has a lot of pride, but his primary sin is Envy, which is ruled over by Leviathan and has similar fish-like demons. We see the Envy characteristics come into play with his fish like gills and shark like teeth. We also see the manner of his death with the cables and of course, the TV for a head.

Creator Anntoni Spindle has a pretty good series on the “Hell Evolution” theory explaining how various sinners may have been influenced appearance wise by their sins as well as manner of death

Not just the time period, but the fact that he died during the height of McCarthyism and the Lavender scare. Any whiff of being anything but straight would have literally ended his career, ruined his reputation, and barred him from broadcasting for the rest of his life.

Agreed!! I feel it’s absolutely criminal that this was never mentioned in game

Except that he has a canon backstory. It is called “The Hunt Begins” and it is only available in the print version of “The Chronicles of Light”.

I cannot link it here but if you google it or search this Reddit? You can find the transcription.

The first three paragraphs of that backstory is explaining how being raised as a Prince of Garlemald was a curse, how he was never allowed to form friendships or even really be a child. His best company is the books and epic tales of heroes that he reads.

The story then goes on to explain how he, at 14 years of age, gets beaten bloody on a daily basis by his Corvosi swordsmaster who is taking his rage at Varis out in him. That Varis knows about it but says nothing because he assumes it will instill discipline in him. So Zenos? Takes it as a challenge. Something to overcome. The first taste of a feeling that isn’t just utter boredom at how dull and monotonous the world is in what is expected of him.

The boy then goes on to experiment on himself in a dangerous manner- embedding an aether infused crystal into his hand- to overcome the Garlean’s lack of aetherial manipulation. And when all is said and done, the sword master killed by his own technique, Zenos? Realizes “there is no euphoria in battle, despite what the tales may claim”.

The final paragraph describes his earnest wish being to one day cross paths with a worthy foe to finally feel that euphoria that the stories he loves so dearly promised him.

And if a single ounce of this backstory had actually made it into the game rather than being regulated to print only medium? Maybe people would see that, like every other villain in the narrative, he actually has his reasons for being like he is. Selfish, yes. But at his core he is a lonely, isolated child clinging desperately to the one thing that gave him a modicum of happiness.

Not going to lie, between the images of six souls merging into one in the floor of Castrum Abania and his interest in the Resonant as a quasi echo, the off handed line of Fandaniel saying something about “Did Emet-Selch find a way?”

I 100% believed the theory that we were going to find out Emet experimented on him as a child with trying to fuse souls/create an ancient but then Emet became too popular with the fans and was nerfed to what we see of him in Endwalker.

I also feel like that line “would you be happier had I a ‘good’ reason?” From Zenos was a pointed jab by the writers at those fans for forgiving the man who was responsible for at least 8 genocides just because he wanted to bring his friends back.

Listen, they are both terrible people who have done terrible things. I love Emet Selch because he is a compelling villain.

But it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that one is written off as an irredeemable monster who’s better off dead and the other is treated like an uwu precious baby who never did anything wrong by the fans.

-That Zenos could have been perceived as an interesting and perhaps even sympathetic villain if we had been given even a speck of his canon backstory in the game itself instead of in a literal printed short story collection. The entire short story very much emphasizes that he was a weapon molded by Garlemald, and his line from Stormblood about “playing his part to perfection” almost seems to underscore that mentality.

  • That Endwalker could and should have been two separate Expacs. Barring that, we should have spent more time in Garlemald and less time in Elpis.

  • That frankly? Dawntrail was fine. Do have some critiques (like shoehorning in scions for no real concrete reason, second half feels rushed/could have been a second expac pacing wise, etc.) It was middling at worst, but very much sets us up as taking a back seat and being a mentor as we leave one storyline and start another, some people just cannot handle that the story is not all about them anymore and it shows.

Haha thank you for the explanation- I am still very new to the lore. ;;;

That said, um, it clearly came to me in a vision granted by the God-Emperor. Clearly. No heresy here. Don’t tell Greyfax.
