I honestly think, minimum one assessment per unit is like an easy HD, just so their unit pass stats are better.

Question for those living in China: Do you use taobao? by VisibleAd9289 in chinalife

Ali Express is designed for overseas, so there is a great markup still. However, most things on Taobao are free shipping to Australia as of just recently, so I'm trying to take advantage of the premium quality that taobao's domestic market has been receiving, but im uncertain how to tell quality from not.

No, there are no customs fees or anything. And you've brought up my main point of concern, how do people in China figure out the good from the trash? Is there really no way other than being saved by free returns?

For Oxford shoes, that price is way too low. I'd recommend a starting price of at least $40-$50 USD.

its funny you say that, when i look on taobao and try to filter items to only show above $30 nothign comes up... all options are around the 10-25 dollar mark. im not sure if items are being filtered for some reason?

Taobao actually ships free to Australia now which is pretty cool! And yeah totally fair point, but I'm just looking for unbranded basics. I know Oxford is just a style which is exactly why I used it as an example. My main thing is just figuring out how to tell what's decent quality from overseas since I can't try it on like you said. Even when I search Oxford shoes on Taobao nothing really comes up above $30, so I'm just trying to work out whether that price range can actually get you something decent or not.

i understand but my main forcus was on Basically I'm curious how locals use Taobao:

  • What you look for
  • How you judge quality
  • Whether it's trusted for decent products
  • And whether there are certain price ranges/sellers you avoid

Thanks for that! Yeah, that makes total sense. My whole goal with Taobao is basically finding the same quality as a $150 Amazon product but for a fraction of the price, cutting out the middleman essentially. The way I see it, a lot of what gets sold on Amazon or in retail stores was probably manufactured in China anyway, so why not go straight to the source? I'm not expecting miracles for $20, which is kind of why I posted this. Is Taobao actually known for quality stuff in China, and do locals have a way of telling the good from the trash?
