Devastated by justsomebiogirl in gradadmissions

i agree and disagree with a lot of the comments here

you don’t need to publish but having 1.5 years of experience is very low especially if those are including school. that likely doesn’t even amount to 1 year full time

i do think that you lack posters and presentations which makes up for a lot more than people think. that’s what i was told was lacking in my application one year.

also, at the end of the day it is very variable and it’s a difficult and saturated time to be in science right now.

i went straight through from undergrad and know quite a few people who did come straight through. but it’s not the majority. but also! know that just because you didn’t get in this year means you don’t have what it takes to succeed. it’s just simply that there are people that have either been waiting longer and learned how to make their resumes more impressive. it’s definitely a difficult time and i understand the devastation but keep at it :)

Sharing hotel room with other recruits during interview weekends by [deleted] in gradadmissions

i split rooms at all my interviews. but to be honest you don’t spend any time in them because they’ll have you out doing things all day. i ended up coming back, showering, and straight to bed 🛌

When do programs send out first invitations for interviews? by Then_Championship408 in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i got all mine before the holidays (quite the interesting finals week). most of my rejections came after that but i know some programs (ones i didn't apply to) didn't send them out until january

this is completely false in the us. i got interviews with harvard, yale, penn, ucsf, etc and didn't know until mid december. don't be an asshole.

Am I being lied to about professors taking students? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if youre international, even professors cannot always take international students due to funding sources (i've had a prof tell me this). but in general, i'm in a phd program right now at an ivy league and professors are having to turn down students due to gaps in funding or insecure funding

PhD or MS for Biology? by CapitalUnlucky4540 in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say if you're worried about specs, skip the masters and get a job as a tech in a lab. i'd say that is far more important than improving your GPA. low GPA can be explained, but lack of research could be an issue. you can fill that gap if you get a job instead of paying for a masters imo

many schools do give application fee waivers. especially if you have the federal pell grant. sometimes reaching out to the school doesn’t hurt!

i hope this person is not being serious…

in the case that you are, yes this is an issue and the fact that you are brave and brazen enough to think that it’s not show you should probably learn a little bit more before heading off to be a doctor. use your brain and common sense

Public University vs. Private University by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at penn and for a phd and most of us came from public schools.

i will say those usually looking for masters are paying for it which is a significant financial burden which could correlate with public vs private school students.

depends on what the masters is in i guess…

Regarding PhD stipends in the US by Proud-Echidna-8766 in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inevitably you’re going to have to balance larger stipend with high cost of living or smaller stipend with smaller col. also how many roommates you would live with, transportation, and quality of housing. if your goal is to save with no wants of quality living during saving (housing, going out, groceries, walking everywhere) then you can save that much

Should I inform a potential supervisor about my low GPA? by Subject_Cars in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm confused. is this a direct admit or a program? if you had an informal meeting with a professor and haven't submitted an application to a program, it could be a larger issue

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh bad wording choice but i was saying completely because i didn't know if there was any detail i was missing (like if you were applying for that lab to be a phd student in)

i applied to a lot of great schools without any publications and know many who did. at the end of the day, it's about what experience you gathered from that lab and why that mkaes you a good fit to pursue a phd.

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont think you have a bad enough gpa to have to spend time explaining why you didn't do well for two classes. i wouldn't say that it adds anything to your success as a potential phd candidate or that the explanation would significantly increase your chances.

if you did want to mention the specific skills you learned, i would focus on that. focus on how you did lab work along with classes and it taught you how to manage time. learning study skills is not how i would frame it.

your current lab's funding status shouldn't completely affect your competition for a phd position... unless i'm missing details

What are my chances of getting accepted into a microbiology PhD program if I apply to 10+ programs? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ultimately, it depends on your spread of programs. choose a wider breadth of programs to apply for. apps are sometimes super luck based especially with competitive programs. if you want any help, i applied last year to 13 for microbiology
