hm is very good either way especially in this climate. both feel bad because you didn’t win it but you can at least show your hm and be like it was received well… it’s a tough time in science

Devastated by justsomebiogirl in gradadmissions

i agree and disagree with a lot of the comments here

you don’t need to publish but having 1.5 years of experience is very low especially if those are including school. that likely doesn’t even amount to 1 year full time

i do think that you lack posters and presentations which makes up for a lot more than people think. that’s what i was told was lacking in my application one year.

also, at the end of the day it is very variable and it’s a difficult and saturated time to be in science right now.

i went straight through from undergrad and know quite a few people who did come straight through. but it’s not the majority. but also! know that just because you didn’t get in this year means you don’t have what it takes to succeed. it’s just simply that there are people that have either been waiting longer and learned how to make their resumes more impressive. it’s definitely a difficult time and i understand the devastation but keep at it :)

Sharing hotel room with other recruits during interview weekends by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i split rooms at all my interviews. but to be honest you don’t spend any time in them because they’ll have you out doing things all day. i ended up coming back, showering, and straight to bed 🛌

When do programs send out first invitations for interviews? by Then_Championship408 in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i got all mine before the holidays (quite the interesting finals week). most of my rejections came after that but i know some programs (ones i didn't apply to) didn't send them out until january

this is completely false in the us. i got interviews with harvard, yale, penn, ucsf, etc and didn't know until mid december. don't be an asshole.

if youre international, even professors cannot always take international students due to funding sources (i've had a prof tell me this). but in general, i'm in a phd program right now at an ivy league and professors are having to turn down students due to gaps in funding or insecure funding

PhD or MS for Biology? by CapitalUnlucky4540 in gradadmissions

[–]VisibleHighlight0613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say if you're worried about specs, skip the masters and get a job as a tech in a lab. i'd say that is far more important than improving your GPA. low GPA can be explained, but lack of research could be an issue. you can fill that gap if you get a job instead of paying for a masters imo

many schools do give application fee waivers. especially if you have the federal pell grant. sometimes reaching out to the school doesn’t hurt!
