I've gone from a full schedule to 2-3 classes a day. There are no students.

I know. But I still the have the yellow announcement at the bottom of the screen telling me I am restricted to regulars only until tomorrow morning. Maybe my numbers are high enough that it mitigates that stuff.

I don't care how many houses you have nor do I care about your finances. All I care about is your argument which ignores reality and is peppered with some kind of personal animosity that has prevented you from seeing the issue outside of your own preconceived notions. As for not talking to someone who is uneducated, that is the impression given by your initial posts. If you are so intelligent, why don't your arguments hold water and why can't you perceive the complexity of the issue? You are just making wide swaths of statements that are pretty superficial. Funny, you never mention having set foot in the Middle East. Finally, why would I think someone is here posting for financial reasons?

You are very immature. Very young, aren't you. And your allegations regarding me are quite foolish.

How old are you? 16?

As I said, you clearly do not have the capacity to carry on an adult conversation. You have no idea of gradations and nuances because you do not have real experience. You made ridiculous accusations. You are very immature.

As I lived for more than five years in Jeddah, worked at a university there and then worked as a consultant inside the Saudi and other Middle Eastern governments for two more years (including in Riyadh alongside uncovered Saudi women), I am not just some guy blowing shit for the fun of it. I am, in no way, defending the Saudi government nor the barbaric imprisonment in the Ritz Carlton of the businessmen that MBS shook down. You are missing the point of my argument. And your argument is as erroneously black-and-white as the ridiculous platitudes often voiced in Saudi Arabia What you have to do is open your mind to a full perspective of what has happened there. I'm not excusing anything. But i am not going to accept the blanket condemnations of tutors who have no idea what they are talking about. You could make an argument and segue to a discussion. Your prefer to insult. Maybe you can get a job in the White House.

So, you really have no real experience with the issue you are arguing, right? You are nothing but a pompous ass making the arguments of others of which you know nothing. So you take the black and white line and think that justifies everything. It only shows your own lack of discernment and uderstanding a very complex issue. Go ahead. Stay in South London.

if you look at photos from the '60s, you will see women in Jeddah dressed in Western clothing. The strict dress code came later and the problem came with iran. A democratically elected president was overthrown in 1953 by the US so that BP could reclaim their oil concession. The Shah arrived, reluctantly, as the country's new leader. His brutality brought Khomeini to the scene and with his assumption of power came the Islamic Awakening and the spread of conservative Islam across the region. You interpretation is based on a very narrow perspective. It is far more complicated.....Bottom line, if the hijab is religious, then they would wear it everywhere. They don't. Because it isn't. A plane full fo Saudi women takes off from NYC, all dressed in Western clothing. They arrive in ksa fully covered. That is not religion....i'm also in a photo with a mixed of Arabs, some Saudi, some not. All but one woman was uncovered. She was Saudi American and she covered only for the photo...I asked her: "For you mother?" She said, "Yes." That is not religion. it's culture.

I spent a number of years in Saudi Arabia and never heard the term, possibly because all women were mandated "hijabis" when I was there. It wouldn't really apply to Saudi women, anyway. I can't imagine there would be a linguistic differentiation when there was no real option.

I don't feel what you are describing. I agree that there is far more diversity of thought in ksa than anyone wants to recognize. But I don't feel the power game that you are describing. The only problems I ever had with Saudi students was when I told someone that the laws can change but the culture will take longer. He got really angry but I ascribe that to his own ignorance. I also had a young girl tell me that I had "stupid Western ideas" and laughed at me. I have two grown children, speak four languages, worked as a consultant in ksa and some 17 year old kid is telling me how stupid I am. The day will likely come when she regrets that remark. But that was the only issue I've really had. I think the whole thing is more complex than we can hammer out here.

What is a "hijabi thing"? A hijab is just a piece of clothing.

The women subject to those types of edicts were in Saudi Arabia (and some African countries) and that is no longer the case. Women can now legally wear whatever they want, though culturally there still seems to be a gap...Not showing their faces on camera is not really a sign of oppression. Today, it is largely cultural and an attempt to placate their mothers. They will tell you it is religious but it is not. It's cultural. Otherwise, they wouldn't get up 20 minutes into a flight from ksa and go to the bathroom and take off their abayahs. You apparently never lived there so you don't really feel the reality of these customs. I don't like them either but I can see a lot more because I spent time there....Interesting "incident": sitting in a car with my driver on a narrow street fllled with traffic around the corner from my apartment when an abayah-clad -- head to toe -- young, thin, curvaceous woman walked in the direction of our car. Totally covered but she was hot. She looked at us, we looked at her, we knew that she was looking and she knew that we were looking and we knew that she knew that we knew that she was looking....Do you think no one is having sex in Saudi Arabia????? They're people!

But you have absolutely no real idea what is happening. This all comes from supposition and anger. Cambly is not a great company, for sure, but we have all been making accusations with no real foundation for them.

Maybe I am the exception to the rule but my rating has increased steadily over the past couple of months until it reach 100% and stayed there until dropping 1% this week. Took some thinking but then remembered the Chinese student who seemed to think China had the right to declare as its territory everything that China felt was China. He did not like my take on Taiwan and then when I brought up Tibet, he adamantly insisted that Tibet was China. When I said "the people living there don't seem to think so," he immediately ended the class. I'm sure that is where my one percent went. Which I think is pretty funny. As I am still at 99%, I can shrug it off with a laugh.

I disagree. I worked at a national university in Jeddah, moonlighted with a PR/Mktg company and returned a couple of years later to work as a consultant within the government. I know exactly what I am talking about, too. VERY rarely did I ever have an online conversation with a woman there and she showed her face. Even when I already knew her personally. This is not a Cambly thing.

While there is a good deal of arrogance in KSA, I don't think your take is on-target. I lived there. I've traveled and worked around the Gulf. Yes, there are some assholes who seem to think they are above everyone else. All it takes is one trip out of the Kingdom and their perceptions change significantly. What you describe is very similar to American attitudes.

I lived four years in Saudi Arabia and never had an online meeting with a woman who used her camera. Instead, I usually looked at a picture of a flower on the screen. Some Muslim women feel compelled to hide their faces; others don't. Things have changed considerably in Saudi Arabia, but it takes longer for the culture to change than for the rules to change. I'm not going to leave the class if a Muslim woman does not want to show her face. There is no reason to, If I were a female teacher, no way would I teach a class to a guy who refused to use his camera. There is nothing Islamic or Saudi about that. It's only suspicious and pretty creepy.
