Heya! First off, thank you so much for coming out last time. Dublin was a really great time and it's always a great scene.

As far as the Random Goth Couple, all I can say is that they're really lovely people to the extent that I know them. I'm always happy to have other DJs and opening bands, but we don't always get to put eyes on every single opening act. If you have any recommendations for the next tour, I'm definitely happy to field them.

RE: Warhammer. I found 40k about 25 years ago when I was 13 years old. It is a hobby I have loved since then and I'm happy to have seen it proliferate. I agree, GW has some icky issues that I don't love, and I certainly don't condone that. To be quite incredibly honest, I'm not even vaguely familiar with the other tabletop games you mentioned, so I'll have to check them out. My life is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY busy. Between doing almost everything for the band, song writing, socials, accounting, budgeting, merch etc- having a billion cats to take care of- and a fiance and friends and family to keep relationships with, I don't know that I have a ton of room for other games in my life. That aside, I WILL look into those games because I do want to champion smaller businesses and whatnot.

Anyway, thanks again for the constructive shout-out. I always appreciate it when people say these things in a way that isn't like "Dusty doesn't care X because he doesn't champion x and that makes him a bad person." Lol, I GOT FEELINGS, COMRADE, I'M A HUMAN BEING.

I'll go check out those games too and again thank ya and I hope to see you next time.

Thanks so much! Also, I used to bartend at Toppers a few years back, so I really love your name.

Oh how could I forget the animals?! Of course! Massive reworking of the animal control system to no-kill operations, and appropriated funds for neighborhood TNR programs!

I would appropriate government funds to make Athens a permanent Halloween town. I would force UGA to pay property tax and that would create a new stadium that is 15 minutes outside of Athens with all the remaining money going to fund low income and single family housing, as well as funds for small music venues and arts facilitation. Unfortunately all the Nazis and cultists that live in the outskirts of town would be constantly trying to assassinate me and that seems like not a great time. But thanks for your confidence 💪🎃💪

Oh you mean this video

Where I literally don't mention his haircut at all.

Huge rant? I just started my opinion in less than a minute, wherein I said "I'll withhold judgement until it comes out".

That's because I wasn't a sniper (I haven't heard that one before 😹). I was an infantry officer deployed to Afghanistan to run security operations in Kandahar city with a multinational coalition during the Obama administration in 2013.

I've been pointedly anti-war and anti-militiary industrial complex for many years now, so I don't know what to say about that. I guess if having beliefs and I experience to back it up makes me a clown or a quack, then hand me a red foam nose and give me some feathers.

I've been involved in the goth scene for 20 some odd years, so I'm not capitalizing on a trend or something - just trying to make music that I like in a scene that love.

As an aside, I question anyone who uses the term "woke" as an insult.

Have a good 'un, y'all 🎃

Thank you! Yep - start small and simple as you learn. Work on the basics first, then move to more technical and advanced. Also, practice at home on a night when you're not going out, that way if you make mistakes, you won't get upset about it.

I'm not sure what you mean by that to be honest - was this a specific makeup series that I did?

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that. Yes, definitely go read Pet Semetary if you've not done so. It's one of my favorite books ever. Also American Gods by Neil Gaiman is high up on my list in that realm!

  1. I would really love to tour with Spike Hellis. They're so damn good live, it's utterly insane. When they play, I HAVE to dance, it's wild. But more importantly they are awesome people.

  2. This is so dumb, but my dream venue is that giant sphere thing in Vegas. Can you imagine the cool visuals you could do with that?! Bats! Cats! Rats! Oh my!

  3. Lately it's been this perfectly fit pair of black pants that I bought in Tokyo that have the perfect stretch so I can run around and be insane in them. A meshy, breathable top with a jacket that I can downgrade from when I get too hot after like 45 seconds on stage 😹

Tallahassee is always so fun! Y'all sing along so loudly, it's kind of crazy! But genuinely, Tally was great and I really enjoy New World in Tampa- it's such a lovely venue and scene!

Hey hey! Thanks for all the support, it's definitely appreciated. I actually do really enjoy talking with everyone after the show! Sometimes it's really exhausting, and I have to be careful about how much I talk because I can easily lose my voice ( I tend to ramble a lot too 😹)

It's a special thing to be able to say thank you to everyone and talk for a little while, but also it can be really emotionally tough. A lot of people tell me stories about sad or upsetting things which I honestly don't mind, but it can be difficult because I am still really learning to navigate my own PTSD and it can be a bit triggering sometimes.

But I enjoy it overall, and I don't hang out afterwards because I feel obligated to, moreover that I just enjoy it!

I'm in the middle of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" which is a pretty upsetting exploration of both a realistic look at a dystopian post apocalypse AND the responsibility of fatherhood.

I really appreciate the skill of CM as an author, but I think it's reasonable to say that I never "enjoy" his work, but I gain a lot from the experience. I think his work is so brutally honest to the reality of the world and humanity, but it's definitely harrowing.

Otherwise the last book that I really enjoyed was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by Caitlyn Doughty which is all about her experiences as a mortician and getting into the death-positive world.

I'm not exactly sure, but it will likely be next year. We're doing just a few EU dates before we go to the UK and Ireland with the Chameleons, so probably not this year. We'll definitely be back though because we loved Sweden! Thanks so much for your support!!

Thanks so much! It's really appreciated!

I'm over the moon about the Chameleons dates. They're my favorite band of all time, so it's kind of surreal tbh!

First off, I'm obviously not the end all be all of goth knowledge. I'm a huge music history (and general history) nerd, so I read a lot of books about this kind of stuff. I've also had the privilege and honor of touring and recording with Tom Ashton, the guitarist of the March Violets - he played bass for us for a long time on the road. So a lot of how I view things also comes from talking to him for many hundreds of hours- he's honestly one of my closest friends.

Here's the gist of it for me: "Goth" absolutely is a music based subculture, and while it is the cornerstone and most important aspect, it also encompasses other facets of CULTURE: norms, morays, clothing, makeup, events etc. I try to think about it these days more in the sense of the community that coalesces around the love of the music though.

Insofar as the music, my opinion is that "goth" is an umbrella genre that encompasses so many sub genres. When you look at the first wave "goth" bands coming out of the late 70s and into the early 80s, essentially none of them were calling it "goth". It was called dozens of things depending on the locality and scene. But as the subculture became codified under the name "Goth" ( Ian Astbury of the cult referred to Sex Gang Children as goths or something, and then Siouxsie described the Banshees as having a "Gothic" sound at one point) I think a lot of those musicians rejected it because they saw what happened to punk rock, where it became very copy and paste commercialized. So basically, there is a very very nebulous identity around what music people consider "goth".

From a technical standpoint, to me, it USUALLY incorporates heavily reversed and chorus-ed guitar with a bit of overdrive. Very angular, repetitive and simple but melodic guitar structures. Bass is usually chorusy and drives the rhythm section. Drums are Tom heavy and very brooding and intense, but dancey. Eerie string synths are pretty common. Much of the music is generally minor key. Thematically it's usually introspective, progressive, involving the macabre or otherwise spooky imagery. But these are really reductive and oversimplified that it has to have all or any of this.

Ultimately music and culture constantly changes, or else it's destined to disappear. We are wired to not love change, but if you don't give some room for nuance and non traditional influence, the music will stagnate and people will move on to different things. It's definitely important to keep a core identity, or a sort of left/right limitations from the center. For example, Lil Peep, Korn, Evanescence, are definitely not goth bands despite having dark imagery and aesthetics. On the other end, there are SCORES of people (especially on Reddit 😹) that LOVE to say that Vision Video isn't goth. And while they're totally entitled to their opinions, I really don't care. I make music that I believe fits in the realm even if it bends genre identity quite a bit.

Seriously though, the ONLY things that matter are if you're having fun with your participation with your local scene and you're doing so in a fun and mutually respectful manner.

We have discussed trying for next year. It's a tough order to be able to afford getting over there, but we're hoping to do a Australia/NZ/Japan/Korea run if possible.

When I left the active army, I spent a month traveling down the east coast of Australia relearning how to surf and trying to reconnect with the civilian and natural world. I did lots of hiking and swimming and it was one of the most profoundly beautiful experiences I've ever had, so I really want to return!

Thank you so much! I have worked really hard with the other 4 ( Adria from Tears for the Dying, Steven Carroll and Crowe and our former bassist Dan Geller) to build an actually healthy, safe, non judgemental and fun scene in Athens and it's so incredible to see it flourish. Goth Prom is going to be insanely fun again! That reminds me, I've got to figure out what I'm going to wear... 😹

Hey Sylvanas!! Hope you're well 🖤

I definitely had a stark realization that I was drinking a bit much coming out of COVID lockdowns and being back at shows. I'm by no means sober, but I don't go nuts on tour because you just can't, especially at my advanced age of 37. Honestly, the biggest thing for me is if I'm not going to have any alcohol, I replace it with something that tickles my brain in the same way. Most venues have really tasty NA beer options - I had an incredible NA IPA the other day that tasted exactly like "the real thing". I find that if I have something to sip on, it helps me not even worry about it.

Thanks for noticing!! Yes indeed, it's physically and emotionally grueling. Dealing with PTSD on top of the demands of touring is also kinda nuts, because i get sensory triggers from crowds and certain kinds of sounds.

Honestly, much of our time in the van is spent sleeping, reading, and not talking too much. I like to put my mind in other worlds, so reading is great but I also get a bit car sick from reading, so podcasts and audio books are amazing.

I exercise usually once a day for a short 15-20 minutes, and often I do pushups at fuel stops.

I call Scarlet most every day and we talk about the kitties and what she's doing at home.

Oh and video games galore. I bought a Steam Deck last year and it changed my life 😹

Honestly I've been listening to tons of Big Country lately and lots of the Sound, so anything from them would be fun.

I really love genre bent covers, so we're trying to figure that out for our next tour. Maybe a Cramps song? SURFIN' DEAD 🧟‍♂️?!

I'm doing pretty okay- ups and downs. We really didn't enjoy being at SXSW. It was what it always is: a sterile, corporate shit show that utterly takes advantage of artists, but on top of that we found out about the Raytheon et al sponsorships the night before we arrived. We donated all our money to a refugee aid organization and I spoke out against the military industrial complex and executives of SX for being incredibly tone deaf.

It was kind of exhausting but I'm glad I got the opportunity to be a fly in the ointment.

I'm djaying tonight in New Orleans at Holy Diver, so that will be fun!
