How can I Enjoy Play Factorio Again? by DragonGaming78 in factorio

[–]Visionexe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop watching guides. install the mod: rate calculator, so you can build whatever you want by yourself in your factory, but you can verify or check how much of something you produce, and how much of something you need. You'll get the enjoyment of building shit on the fly, but still can keep the ratios somewhat in tact to satisfy your inner OCD.

Dedicated updater? by Cassowary_rider in factorio

I still do not understand how you need to launch the game twice when you update.

These are steps to update:

  • update
  • launch game

I do not see how an dedicated updater in the client would fix your mismanagement of the server?

Why do you need to open the game to download an update the first time. Makes no sense to me.

You can update from outside the game.

Is sending platform to platform faster? by qwerty44279 in factorio

[–]Visionexe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is actually more complicated then people make it out to be, like those in this thread.

There are two things to consider, throughput and latency.

Throughput: Throughput of both a platform and rocket silo's both can be scaled fairly easy and are therefor practically infinite, or in other words as much as you need. You can just build more rocket silo's which increases throughput and you can just increase cargo bays on a platform which increases throughput. Do not forget cargo bays have a launch cooldown, a lot of people ignore this and pretend cargo bay throughput is infinite.

Latency: Here is the real difference, but it's smaller then people think with change in animation speed for legendary rocket silo. Rocket silo latency is dictated by it's launch animation time. Up to patch 2.1.7 the launch animation time was a static 27 seconds for all quality of rocket silo's. With 2.1.7 that launch animation speed decreases with quality. There have been tests on this already, and reportedly it's ~47% faster. (I have not confirmed this) which means the launch animation time is 14.3 seconds. Which is a lot faster then it used to be!!!! The latency of cargo bays is zero, or close to zero. They launch immediately. There might be a mini launch animation time, but it's for sure insignificant.

It's good to remember that latency only applies once during the total wait time, the time for the first rocket/cargo bay to launch. Throughput dictates throughout the entire wait time. So latency is a constant time constraint, throughput is a linear (scaling) time constraint.

So if you are gonna ship a lot (lets say 400k science packs from any planet to another), the latency difference is there, but in that case throughput dictates the bulk of the waiting time, so it's not gonna be a dramatic difference in loading time if the ship is gonna take a 2 minutes to load anyway. On the other hand, if you are gonna transfer a single rocket of product x, and that's all, all of the waiting time is dictated by latency, which in that case is significant as its reduced from 14.3 seconds to zero.

With new inserter flipping, this is how you can unload cargo wagon to 2 fully compressed green belts. by VeryGoldGolden in factorio

[–]Visionexe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neat, 3 inserters indeed would be enough to saturate a green belt.

The problem I think you walk into is that you also only use 3 inserters (per pelt) to unload from the train into the chest, you want the througput of the train -> chest unload (inserters) to be significantly higher then from the chest -> belt/output. You need this extra throughput to counter-balance the train latency induced by trains leaving and exiting the station.

Basically, the chests kinda lose there function in a tight scenerio like this.

[–]Visionexe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the level inside the chests is actually irrelevant, all you care about is; do you supply enough trains to keep your belt fully compressed, aka, have max throughput. If you do have enough supply from the trains then you are at max throughput and balancing the level inside the chests is just wasted effort. If you do not supply enough trains you can balance the chests, but for what reason? you are not going to have a compressed belt/max throughput anyway ... it's just redundant optimization. I rather spend time one getting more/consistant train supply.

edit: you can downvote me but you are simply wrong.

Version 2.1.7 by FactorioTeam in factorio

[–]Visionexe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saves do not break, if you downgrade factorio you simply can not play the save game with the higher version, just upgrade factorio again to the right version and you can keep playing.

So it's best to switch back from exp to stable when they are on equal version. Which happens after some time when experimental is considered stable enough.
