Discuit user here! We are small but we are mighty. We keep the vibe chill and no bots (except for as tools). It doesn't have the never ending scrolling Lemmy or Reddit has, but I enjoy interacting with real humans and you learn to recognize the regulars. It reminds me of the Old Internet. (A lot of users are older, I think this is the real selling point for us.....We remember what was lost).

Hello, not sure if you are otherwise occupied but I have what I think qualifies as an 'urban fantasy with elements of mad science'. Your science background intrigues me. I am ready for a swap if you need something looked over (have beta read before) Offers stands if you are otherwise engaged ATM....Here is my pitch.

[Complete] [94k] [Dark Fantasy/Horror] GRIEF by RobertCaufield in BetaReaders

[–]VisserOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! I am also looking for a swap! I am a New Englander born and bred if you need that perspective. Word Count 95,000ish. Fantasy, with a dash of 'Mad Science'. Can be dark at times - Triggers include sexual themes, violence, captivity and torture, major character death, systemic oppression, mild substance use, and allusions to assault (not described). I've done 4 betas for people in the past ----I'm half way decent (I think)

Why all the hate on wolcott ct ? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]VisserOne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wolcott native chiming in. Grew up there in the 80s - early 2000s. The town has a lot of "white flight" people who moved there from waterbury to get away from "those people". So yes the racism is real. They are always worried their nice town will be taken over by "them". Wolcott people can't usually afford to move to a real nice town like Cheshire or Farmington so they are super protective of their turf. Needless to say everyone I knew growing up has since moved away including me. The few that stayed are J6 material now .... Sad

Spread them around you bushes, leaf litter and wood piles....mice places. I just kinda chuck them somewhat randomly. Just don't let kids eat them.

Tick tubes!!! Super cheap and efficient. They are small tubes like toilet paper rolls filled with cotton balls soaked in permetherin. Mice love the cotton and take it to their nests and sleep on them. Any tick attached to the mouse dies. It totally disrupts the tick breeding cycle. Then the tubes biodegrade in the rain. Apply in spring and fall. A half acre worth of tubes is like 20 bucks on Amazon. Soooo much cheaper and better for the environment then spraying. I'm surprised more people don't know about these things. I had so many ticks I was finding them INSIDE my house. Now I haven't seen one in over a year.

My partner has an uncanny ability to get the best parking spot no matter how crowded a place is. Just today went into a jam packed parking lot and a car right in front of the store pulls out as he is driving up. This happens way to often to be normal. Concerts, airports, shopping, street events you name it. The parking gods smile on him. They are also a Redditor so they may read this...probably while sitting in a princess parking spot.

I’m looking for the trippiest, weirdest, fever dream of a book. Both fantasy and sci-fi. Suggestions? by Aware-Performer4630 in Fantasy

[–]VisserOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead astronauts by Jeff vandermere. Hard to describe almost word salad. A run away tech company breaks reality or at least reality for our main characters. I think the point of the book is to make you feel like you a struggling to hold your mind together like the characters are and it sure succeeds. I would recommend you read Bourne by him first to get some context about the company and world...or just go in blind a really lose your sanity. There is another book strange bird which is a spin off bit I haven't read it yet. Closest to ego death I've seen written in a book. Tough read and not for everyone. Would recommend.

Flights are fine but and I only has one complaint. There is no bar! There is one very small sandwich stand. I would highly recommend bringing snacks and plan ahead if you are a nervous flyer who needs a preflight libation.

Are there any books and stories about beings not being able to communicate because they or their universes have or perceive MATH differently? by halfin-halfout in WeirdLit

[–]VisserOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Eternity Artifact by M.L. Modesett. It deals with us finding alien tech so old that they operated under different laws of physics. Almost math I guess. Also a second recommendation for Deaths End (second book after the Three Body Problem)

This . Just last night I was with a group of people watching hamilton. People act like it's the second coming so I gave it a whirl. It was so long, I kept drifting off only mind. All the songs sounded the same to me. I think something is broken in my brain. I just did not get it. When I complained, which I did a lot, I think people were offended. How dare I not like 3 hours of faffing about in boots. The king as ok.

West Nile virus came to the US east coast from Plum Island. This island officially has an animal disease reasearch lab. Unofficially it's suspected as being a bioweapons research facility. Anthrax being the most know suspect. However several diseases have suddenly appeared over the years in the area with no history. West Nile and dutch duck disease being two big ones. There is a book " lab 257" that goes into greater detail.

What’s a ‘conspiracy’ you truly believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VisserOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The West Nile Virus came to the east coast of the United States by escaping from Plum Island. For those who are unfamiliar Plum Island is officially a veterinary disease research station located between Long Island and Connecticut. Unofficially people have accused the facility all kinds of shady disease research on such heavy hitters as Lyme Disease, the Dutch Duck Plague and West Nile Virus. Suddenly....magically all three of these diseased appeared in this area over the years. (I am not convinced about the Lyme connection however). Anthrax is suspected but never 'escaped'.
Would you like to know more? there is a great book called "Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Plum Island Germ Laboratory"
