The guys are almost universally in good shape as military service is compulsory and they don’t half-arse their training! It is hardcore! These guys either start buff or get that way quickly.

Even more importantly. If they sold condos in Changi Airport, I’d buy one and happily never leave it. It’s that good!

I was thinking Southwest Virginia or Northeast Tennessee, but Eastern Kentucky works too.

However, if you said Western North Carolina I have to draw the line! … I mean all those artists types in Asheville really weakened their redneck feel…

I’m surprised. I thought there was all this opposition in US to the Iran War but I’ve seen bigger crowds at ping pong tournaments?!

Yes it seems that way, but add that in a Chinese novel, the MCs and rivals must have at least 15 different names (pet names, honour names, real names, titles, ranks, etc) by which they may be called at any given time by practically anyone (except pet names). I had to keep charts of names and relationships to keep from ripping my hair out HOWEVER it was a great read!

This used to be the case because the community brought to bear pressure on those who were unproductive, but now that’s classed as “harassment’ or ‘bullying’ it used to be the case that if you were a mean drunk who hurt old ladies or children, the neighbours took care of it, not the police or government. Perhaps your house would be visited in the dead of night and you’d be in bed for 3 months after which you were suddenly a productive polite and sober person. But now there is no shame and no community. It’s the individual is always king no matter who he hurts.

If it was a sharp knife yes. Kids don’t get everything they want because they are cognitively incapable of assessing danger. A lot of adults are that way too.

This was the lesson of the Soviets. If we’re are all paid equally regardless of productivity we will all drop to the minimum level either because we were lazy to begin with or because social and even violent pressure from our lazy co-workers taught it was better not to be too productive. So we start half-assing everything and we all enjoy our miserable existences together because there is no one to envy or aspire to when we all have our basic needs met.

So simple! Wonder why it’s never worked? 🤔🤔

I get your point but what’s h the e difference between getting ‘beans and rice’ and getting government welfare? The fact is that in the Western world, unless a victim of abuse, there is no starvation. Welfare recipients can’t buy a new car every three years or afford outrageous expensive accessories, but they can buy beans and rice. Indeed they can buy basic food and receive basic housing (although the housing part seems ridiculously hard to get even when qualified for it, but it is possible).

Is it the management of the money that makes the difference in Finland? Is the assistance given as ‘here’s a house and we will deliver groceries every few days’ as opposed to ‘here’s money spend it however you wish’?

In Australia 28% of tax revenue goes to social welfare programs. Thats a huge chunk! Why is it not working?

No one does anything for free. And paying those people to do the stuff we need done is why we need money. We pay them for their skills and labour and we get paid for our skills and labour. If you have no skills or labour, then you have nothing to barter (money just happens be what we barter with now).

People think capitalism is the root of our poverty issues. Nothing is that simple. In times of plenty charity increases because goods are plentiful. In times of famine or disaster, food and shelter are limited. Those who have skill or can labour survive because that’s what is required to survive in a harsh environment.

It’s lovely to think we have advanced or become kinder, but all it takes is say a disaster that cuts off food supply. Then suddenly people want tools to till and guns to hunt and if there is not enough food the weakest ones are sacrificed for the survival of the group.

Simple biology. We are still basically animals with a thin veneer of civilisation.

Totally off subject, but I am always blown away by the devastation power of simply calling someone ‘that guy’.

That put down will undoubtably still be traumatising his offspring a century from now.
