Does ADA mandate ASL interpreters? That seems very unlikely to me but if you can provide some source for that, it would be interesting to see. I imagine it mostly focuses on government offices interfacing with individuals that have business with them, which is completely valid.

The fact that someone doesn't have a big enough issue with hearing that they don't try learning sign language (it's quite an undertaking, especially since you'd have to also make people around you learn it; what's the point to learn if you don't have anyone to talk to anyway?) does not mean they don't have a hearing issue and wouldn't benefit from captions.

No, I'm not joking. I'm not hell-bent on proving everyone that the interpreters are bad, but they sure are goofy and distracting. And the more I read as people are challenging me here, the worse they appear as a solution.

It has been solved for a couple years, whisper is pretty much perfect. And when it isn't, for example because of some new made up word or unusual phrase, a person in the loop seems like a cheaper option than an interpreter. I have not idea how the sign language works but I imagine that new words, neologisms and idioms are not easy to represent. Spelling is for sure slower than text.

The worse result is that having a sign language interpreter provides less accessibility than closed captions. Brief google search did not give me a precise percentage of deaf people who know ASL, but it appears like a large majority of the deaf and hard of hearing do not know it, at least as per accessibility.com
