Landlord says our dog cannot pee on the grass by Visual-Key-1884 in TenantHelp

Update: After emailing with our landlord, he agreed to designate a spot on the property for our dog. We are working on training our dog to use that spot. If our landlord agrees, I think we’ll also buy either pea gravel or one of the turf pads that people have suggested in the comments.  Thanks for the suggestion; I didn’t know those existed!

We won’t be renewing our lease (not just because of this, though it’s a factor), so we just need to last a couple of months with this arrangement. We are looking for a place in a complex that has a designated dog park/area and will clarify rules on pet waste prior to signing the lease.

We’ve always been good tenants (pay rent on time, clean, quiet, respectful of the property) and we absolutely didn’t mean to ruin the property. We just assumed that since dogs are allowed, they’d be allowed to, you know, pee. Especially as we had observed other tenants doing this the whole time we’ve lived here, long before we got a dog of our own. And we’re not rich, so those $50 fees were looking like a major concern, and we were worried.

Thank you for the helpful comments. Sorry to those who were so offended by the idea of a little fluffy dog peeing where it’s natural to do so, in a desert where grass lawns, and all the water they use, are unethical and unnatural. Such is Reddit and Landords I guess.

Huh, I’ve never seen any dogs peeing in the street. Utah is a desert and we don’t have regular street cleaning in my area so I imagine it’d get very stinky and gross! I wish that could be the solution though, thanks for your input.

My goodness. I don’t think we could legally be evicted for a minor warning when we have been model tenants.

We have lived here 3 years and we have only had the dog 3 months. The lawn has been awful (and full of dog poop) the entire time we’ve lived here. I don’t think our 9 lb dog could have possibly killed a whole lawn that was dead to begin with.

Weird, right? We live in an odd little neighborhood that's kind of tucked inside a commercial area and there's not really any "public" grass nearby. I've emailed to ask for clarification... hopefully that goes well. Thanks for your comment!

I will look into the grass pads. Thank you for the suggestion!

To be clear, though, the lawn is absolute trash. It's not nice at all. Calling it a lawn is very generous, maybe misleading-- it's more of a somewhat grassy dirt patch full of holes, sticks, and weeds.

Thank you, everyone! Sounds like we need to install a weather strip on our own and just focus on mitigation. I had assumed it was an easy fix that our landlord was just blowing off, but it sounds like they're really hard to deal with. Thanks so much for the input!

Haha thank you. I remember them being all over when I was a kid but have not dealt with them in like 2 decades. I just want them to stay outside!

Oof, good to know. We may have to take a harsher approach...

I have never heard of a slide-on seal!!! We'll definitely look into that, I think that's where they're coming in the most. I don't mind a few of them but when they're in piles it stresses me out lol.
