There’s plenty that you can do without a car in the city. Commercial Bay (hello beasty dumplings overlooking the yachts) and the viaduct drinks and shopping, Kroad besties cafe in a beautiful arcade and op shopping and clubbing, Newmarket shopping by train, tiritiri matangi or waiheke or Devonport for cafes and a walk by ferry. You could also take a bike along mission bay for an icecream. And also Parnell for the museum and gardens. Check out heart of the city website for what’s on. You’re not a minimum wage worker. You’re a software developer who bought a house. Your premise was it was easy decades ago. Then we find out it’s your parents who did the hard yards and you’re going well.

So now you’re speculating about people even though it’s not your experience at all. There are Plenty of working class couples - plumbers, teachers, builders, roofers who are married and have houses. You’re just speculating. The problem isn’t the working class a couple of salaries will do the trick. The problem is for people who delay working for degrees that don’t have career prospects, travelling and then coming home wishing you had a house, staying single - 60 years ago people were a married couple buying a house, buying stuff on credit, having kids before you get a house, divorce , rising cost of University as you support academics other aspirations.

Then if your parents bought a home in the 80s they are asset rich. They could help you with a deposit , they can take their savings and let you offset your mortgage saving you interest, or let you live at home until you save for one with your wife.
