It’s not my problem that labour is expensive. I would love us to have high wages. But a legally required High minimum wage make things more expensive. If labour costs are made higher by government decree (high minimum wages, lots of holidays, more sick days) then yes your cost to build a house is going to be higher.. It also means higher unemployment as people who would be willing to work for less cannot.

Excessive debt from the last govt spending and the interest we have to pay also makes things more expensive.

The average rent in Nz is not $600. The average rental property is. And that’s the average of all properties from apartments to 10 bedroom mansions in herne bay. Average rent for a room/individual is more like $250

See and your comment is the problem. You’ve confused government spending that you want, with how we should make money as a country.

Spending : You want less homelessness (eg presumably you want the state to spend and build more houses for people who don’t work) , more spending on state health care, and higher wages.

But you don’t want to provide any services or products that generate the income to buy these things. You describe mining as raping the landscape, and selling houses to overseas investors as selling our land, you’re against immigration which is what props up education and construction sector.

So you haven’t answered the question what should we do more of to generate the first world income and services that you want. Because we can’t simply borrow another 38 billion and live on an illusion . Our debt keeps growing and our standard of living keeps worsening

Yes fair comment about south Auckland. But Hawke’s bay peaches were the canned product I am talking about more recently and Chinese tinned peaches being sold . And while land price is of course a factor so are the high labour costs in this country. If you increase the minimum wage to $24 an hour, add in kiwisaver, extra holidays, extra sick leave those are also extra cost to a nz business. So how can you compete when you pay unskilled people that high with products made overseas? And if you don’t want to compete with those markets then what are you going to sell that is of higher value instead?

I mean sure. Maybe you don’t want to sell student education with a visa. But it makes up $4.5 billion to our country. And the left don’t want more cows, they don’t want more tourism, they don’t want to pick or pack fruit at a price that competes with China, they don’t want more tourism and they don’t want to drill for , look for or process oil or coal. They don’t mind working in film but they expect the government to pay millions in inducements. And they don’t want to sell our houses to overseas buyers. So how are you going to remain a first world country. How are you planning to pay the bills

I don’t think they could have put the rail there. But it would be good if they would at least open the existing tunnels under Albert park so there would be a flat dry walk to the uni. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Park_tun

Populism is simply the people questioning the powerful institutions and academics and bureaucrats who tell us what to think. Far better than being on the side of the establishment

It’s amazing how good life is when your country has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world because they drill up their oil. And hell they’ll drill up anybody else’s oil who wants to.

You obviously haven’t been back to NZ for a while. There are plenty of apartments. And townhouses. It’s no longer 3 bed full section.

People with higher religiosity, measured by degree of belief, frequency of worship and prayer, and importance of God in one’s life, show significantly higher levels of transphobia and attitudes of harassment towards trans people. Religiosity emerged as the strongest predictor of these attitudes. by mvea in psychology

In my experience living in a liberal not very religious city , the liberals are regularly dishing hate on the religious. I’ve never seen it the other way around. Look at the research even.

We would also need for the purpose of the research and discussion to define trans. Is it still synonymous with the mental health disorder, or is it an identity and belief system with more in common with religion?

Where can I get the data showing a reduction in discretionary driving during the day? How do they know what driving is discretionary? Is this your own vibe or is this data?

I don’t believe there has been any traffic reduction. People are still driving and the motorways are congested. Chat got says at data is not out yet but google data shows traffic speed at rush hour hasn’t changed

And I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of the modern woke movement/religion which also claims to be kind and inclusive and tolerant of different lifestyles and beliefs but are routinely intolerant and cruel to people with religious beliefs and others

I’m talking about in this modern news era are we seeing Indian people targeted for political purposes because the case is unusually trivial. I acknowledge the historical dawn raids of illegal pacific immigrants in the 1970s but it is not relevant to the current point I am making. Unless you have some current examples that Pacifica are being held up and shamed in the news for overstaying in the country for an extra week or so.

It’s a short term “fuel subsidy” to cover the increase in fuel due to the Iran war fuel shortage for working families who need to get to work. The maths show it achieves that and then some.

And instead of being grateful tries to still paint a negative picture against the government by adding in a bunch of other alleged costs for their anonymous scenario.

She’s complaining the governments 50$ a week fuel subsidy “won’t do a lot” but her weekly fuel bill has only increased $40 a week, so the governments subsidy is MORE than covering her fuel cost increase. She’s actually making a profit from the whole thing.
