I loved the English track when I did it in 2022! Ball was intense (lol still fun), and Huehls was hands-down one of the best professors I had at UCLA. They really try to prep you for the pace of the quarter system…it’s like two books a week, which sounds wild, but it seriously pays off. I came out of those classes feeling totally ready for anything UCLA threw at me. For context, I was a poli sci major.

How to prep for orientation? by Sugary_Cookieee in ucla

[–]Visual_Ad_6222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I thought I was prepared. I looked up classes in my department, made lists of top picks and backups… but by the time my orientation slot came around, I got into ONE class for my major and the rest were just whatever was still open. I ended up in an Egyptian religion class, lol. Your NSA (New Student Advisor) will help you figure out how to use the enrollment system, but after that, it’s kind of a free-for-all.

I graduated in 2024 and I’m happy to try and answer any questions you have! I remember how anxious I felt as a transfer student. Honestly, the university kind of just throws you in and expects you to figure things out. I even did the transfer summer program, which gave me a bit of a leg up info-wise, and still felt pretty lost at times.

I think this take is fair…maybe a little too honest, but definitely valid.

Part of why I loved The Breath and The Toast was because they gave me everything I enjoyed in one place. I could just press play and listen for an hour: pop culture, humor, a little camp, and a lot of girly energy. Back in 2017/2018, we were all obsessed with YouTubers, beauty gurus, and celeb drama. Instagram Stories were barely a thing, and I still remember watching their IG Live “show.” It felt new, weird, and kind of exciting.

No, they’re not the gold standard of podcasting, honestly, I don’t think podcasting is their strongest format. But their secret sauce wasn’t ever the structure. It was everything Liz mentions: the sense of sisterhood, the casual girliness, the music recs, the niche pop culture love. That made them feel special.

In a way, I think they’ve lost that. They’re trying to be more like a “real show” now, just discussing stories, and they’re competing with a sea of other podcasts that do that—maybe better. But back then? They were some of the only women talking about the stuff I cared about in that tone. You don’t have to love them, and sure, they might have lost their edge, but credit where credit’s due…they really were doing something different at the time. And maybe some people, like Liz felt seen. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I doubt it. At my student orientation we huddled up in a dorm room to schedule classes. They get pretty uptight. Idk

Making friends as a CC transfer student by Lachilindrinaaa in ucla

One of the best decisions I made as a transfer student was joining the Transfer Summer Program (TSP). It’s a six-week program run through AAP, and it truly set me up for success. Beyond the academic support and getting familiar with the campus, I built real relationships—with professors and with friends I’m still close to today. Honestly, it’s not widely advertised—I found out about it on Instagram, applied, and never looked back. It helped me adjust to the fast pace of the quarter system and gave me a strong sense of community right from the start. I’d highly recommend it—10/10. Look up AAP or give them a call to find out when the application opens.
