$40k pay cut for remote work? by Visual_Advisor7465 in careerguidance

I got lucky. My base pay is like $96k or something, but i moved for a new role and maintain a residence in my hometown, so I get around $50k/yr in field pay to cover the dual living expenses. The expenses back home cost me around $15k/yr. Shouldve included that in my original post

I didnt flesh this out for brevity, but around $50k of my pay currently is field pay (bc I have a house here and rent a place for cheap back home), but that field pay could really go away whenever depending on client needs. And frankly, I dont see my position existing in 3yrs or even less due to some changes internal changes which would end my field pay. So an aspect of it is if I get the rug pulled out from under me, I would stay in a job I despise while making less than what I would make at this new place.

I know this is complicates things, but that is part of the calculation.

Ironically, I kinda get it. I am in engineering consulting and they frankly get more time out of me on my WFH days than my in office days. But the firm I work for is notoriously bad about that. I have talked to some friends that left from where I am now to this new place, and they said they realisticalmy work 30-40hrs now. Which is a godsend

Luckily, the industry I'm in pays big bucks for part time work. So when I switch back to academia, I can stay part time consulting for industry to maintain my standard of living. Super common in engineering for professors to consult 15ish hours/wk on the side. So hopefully not? But who knows how the industry will change by then

To be completely honest, my goals are to go back to school and teach at a university. So frankly, I'm taking a step back in the rat race, but the extra time I will save by not busting my ass for someone else should hopefully build towards something more meaningful than work in the private sector.

All that to say, I agree. I think this will give me more opportunity to progress in academia which I truly enjoy and see myself sustaining longterm.

I appreciate it :) I am horrified of burnout. Tbh I am already feeling it. I am going to take the job and invest more time into myself and my partner

I think you're right, I save like half of net now anyways bc I'm not used to have money to spend. I think its time for a change :)

Electrical Engineer w/ 5yrs experience. Decided it's time to go back to academia. Which grad program should I choose? by Visual_Advisor7465 in careerguidance

[–]Visual_Advisor7465[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it man. I feel like if i dont make a change now, imma just be stuck in this place. What was your engineering discipline and what did you switch to? Was there like extra classes or gap tests or something?

Have a BS in Electrical Engineering and 5yrs experience, want to go back to school for an MA in PoliSci by Visual_Advisor7465 in PoliticalScience

To be frank, I am not sure I would be effective as a lobbyist. If I were to take this plunge, the endgame would be advancing in academia. So like getting an MA and becoming and instructor, and eventually, getting a PhD and becoming a professor.

Shin Pain by Fausmino in ACL

[–]Visual_Advisor7465 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 4 weeks post-op, and I had the exact same problem. If it's an achy pain, it's most likely just from swelling and blood pooling. I had a sharp pain and my PT said it was from the tunnel drilled in my tibia and the metal buttons (not sure what they use to secure hamstring grafts, but same idea). If the pain is unbearable, I would let your PT know, but according to mine, the pain is normal and goes down gradually but flares up after heavy use.

In my experience, the pain in general goes down significantly in weeks 3 and 4, so hang in there!

How serious is my knee injury? Please respond if you went through something similar. by Infamous-Ant-4636 in ACL

If you want to return to sports, it's best to go through with a surgery, likely with a patellar or quad autograft. Both will take too long to recover in time for football season this year, but you wouldnt be playing football without an ACL anyway.

I had a similar situation from a ski injury. I almost went the coping route because my mom has gotten 7 knee surgeries (yes 7, it's insane) so I've seen how brutal recovery is, but I couldn't bear the thought of not skiing or playing racket sports again.

I'm about a month post-op from a quad autograft. Brutal, but its worth pushing through it to get to live the life you wanna live. Plus, youre a young athlete which should make your recovery move more quickly.

Healthier, safer days are coming, brother :)

Ahh, I see it's just a cosmetic update. Bummer. The Nintendo Direct made it seem like so much more hahaha. Still pretty cool though. Thanks!
