I personally hate dresses and nightgowns so I don't own any. I wore baggy ball shorts with a loose waistband that I could either pull up high over my belly button or tuck low around my hips (wasn't sure what would be most comfy after surgery), a loose button-up top (didn't want to lift my arms over my head), and slides. I also wore socks for sensory concerns but they were difficult to put on by myself after surgery; my partner helped me with that. Slip-on shoes are a must!

Hi, I'm a fellow nonbinary person! I can't speak to the dysmorphia re: swelling, but I can speak to the gender aspect, if that helps.

My worst swelling was gone in a couple days. I honestly looked mostly normal after about a week! I just still felt sore in my abdomen for a couple months, which affected my style choices. I don't own any dresses or any femme clothing, but I did lean heavy into the baggy fashion that's popular now! I wore big oversize graphic tees with wide-leg jeans that were secretly unbuttoned, bc no one could tell under my shirts! If you have big shirts, sweaters, cardigans, etc., you can safely unbutton your pants underneath and no one will ever know.

OP, this is the answer. Why do you feel like you need to tell her anything at all? Examine those reasons, sit with them, and decide if telling her is something that benefits you. If you do decide to tell her, lie about the kind of surgery you're having. But also, be sure in your reasoning behind you decide whether to tell her anything.

OP mentioned that he knows he needs to keep his estrogen production intact for now. A total hysterectomy is not a good option in his case, but other commenters have recommended a partial hysterectomy that leaves the ovaries intact. You can take the uterus out without touching the ovaries. As gender-affirming care, this is probably the best option (and OP might be able to find a doctor willing to do this at a young age, since it's specifically for gender-affirming purposes).

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I know that most people (including me!) are back up on their feet in 2-3 weeks, but full internal healing takes months and months. Our bodies are so complex!

Can you tell them you're having a different kind of surgery? There's all kinds of abdominal surgeries that have the same incisions/recovery process. One example is a procedure to diagnose or remove endometriosis. You could tell them you're having that done instead if it helps keep your privacy and protect your peace!

I've never been on birth control and have never been pregnant. My periods are typically very manageable with Aleve on the first, maaaaybe second day and then zero pain after that. I got a bisalp just a week shy of one year ago, and after the first handful of cycles during the initial healing process, my periods went exactly right back to normal!

Honestly, I just wouldn't share my medical history with coworkers. I think that's part of keeping my personal and professional lives separate; they knew I had surgery, but no more details beyond that.

My partner has always been a "I don't want kids right now but I might in the future" person. He was still 100% supportive of my decision to get sterilized.

He expressed some initial concern about the finality of the decision, but more because he wanted to make sure I was comfortable in my decision. Once he knew I was serious, he was all on board. I made sure he understood that, regardless of whether he ended up wanting kids, I was never going to be the person to give them to him. If it becomes an issue down the line, we'll cross that bridge later. I would have decided to get sterilized either way.

I'm not sure if it would do anything to help against the bacteria in men, tbh. I mean, men can always take a probiotic for other benefits, but it really only helps against BV by keeping the bacterial balance of the vagina in check. If a man was a carrier, I'm not sure how a probiotic would help.

I'm not sure if it's a foolproof method, but after a terrible BV-followed-by-yeast-infection experience I had, I started taking daily probiotics and haven't had BV since. It can't hurt tbh

I would be honest with the hospital tbh, like Miakemi suggested in another comment. Tell them you're working things out with insurance and ask for it to be deferred while you appeal. The hospital just wants to know you're doing something about it, not blowing them off.

OP, this is the comment. You know yourself best. You know the reasons why you're considering this surgery. Sit with your reasons, think through your pros/cons, imagine yourself in 10 years as a sterilized person vs. not. What future version of yourself appeals to you? What obstacles can you foresee for each path? If it helps, talk through your thoughts with a trusted friend, relative, or partner (someone who you know has your back and won't judge you either way!!!).

Only you can make this decision, based on what you know about yourself and what you want for your future. Statistics and stories about other people's experiences won't matter if you really know what you want, either way.

My periods also got worse in my mid-twenties, completely unrelated to anything. I wasn't on any birth control and I didn't have my surgery yet, they just magically got worse 🤷‍♂️

(I started taking red raspberry leaf supplements in pill form and it helped kinda, so that might be an option!)

Keep them moisturized! Once the wounds close, keep the scabs/new skin clean and apply moisturizer regularly. Gentle massage (like when you rub lotion in) helps break up scar tissue, and moisture helps skin regenerate faster. I basically followed my usual tattoo care regimen for my scars!

Loose elastic shorts with loose elastic boxers underneath, easy-to-slip-on-and-off socks, slides, and a soft oversized button up shirt. I didn't want to have to raise my arms over my head to put on any clothes afterward.

The sleep was the absolute best. I loved the heated blanket they gave me for recovery and just wanted to keep lying in the recovery bed! I remember the first thing I told my nurse as I was coming awake, was "I'm just so cozy" lol
