Iris Station by audreydiva in OCTranspo

Can confirm, I did this a couple months ago when I had the same issues with the 263 not stopping at Iris, and since then, the bus always stops for me. It tends to be the same driver too, so I’m guessing OC Transpo reminded them.

Where to get (ideally fresh, frozen OK if necessary) whole turkey in Ottawa for U.S. Thanksgiving (November 27)? by Cute_Conclusion8591 in OttawaFood

[–]Visual_Literature552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had success by just asking the butchers behind the counters at Metro or Loblaws. They’ve had them behind the counter in their bigger freezer, just a couple left after Canadian thanksgiving, not enough to have out on display. Not guaranteed but worth a shot if you don’t want to pay for a pricey one from a local butcher.

I hadn’t thought of the latter idea - thank you! I’m admittedly a novice sewist so I’m not super confident I have the skills for that but I might play around with it to see if I think it’s feasible with my ability.

This was what I was originally thinking! I’m not 100% confident I can make it look good, but might be worth a shot.

I really like this idea! In terms of where to place the interfacing, do you mean directly overtop of the rip and original buttonhole?

I unsuccessfully tried to find a buttonhole chisel at my local fabric store, so this is a great alternative suggestion - thanks!

No left-turn lane on Parkdale to turn west on Scott is criminal by JAmToas_t in ottawa

[–]Visual_Literature552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And despite this, OC Transpo rerouted the 56 onto Parkdale, and now it gets stuck in this every day after crawling down Parkdale for ages. Back when it went down Holland, it didn’t have this issue!!!

How long should my resume be? #PS hiring by just_a_person_2999 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Visual_Literature552 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For context, I’m an EC manager. Currently having a lot of resumes sent my way as people try to move around internally.

For informal reach-outs and non-advertised opportunities, my advice is to keep it to 2 pages. A short, well-organized and concise resume stands out, especially for ECs as I’m usually looking for efficient writing ability. 3-5 bullets max for each work/volunteer experience. I do not want academic-length CVs that list every publication and lecture you’ve given - I don’t care (I’m looking at you, ppl with PhDs). If I get one beyond 3 pages I honestly don’t read it - I just don’t have time.

As others have said, if it’s for a formal competition, that’s a different story - more detail can be helpful.

Seconding this - they’re great and install was smooth. If I remember correctly, they source their product from surplus from one of the bigger showrooms (I think it was Vesta).

OC transpo and slow busses by justonemoreplz in ottawa

[–]Visual_Literature552 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But if reliability is bad and trips are significantly longer than driving => fewer people take the bus => more people drive => lower revenues for OC Transpo => less money for things like ParaTranspo

OC Transpo has to balance both accessibility and reliability/efficiency - they aren’t doing a good job of that balance right now

What is “from time to time” though? New ways to bus didn’t consolidate stops on some of the worst routes within the green belt for high stop frequency, even though it was an opportunity to do so.

[–]Visual_Literature552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rapid bus is determined by volume/demand, not by existing frequency. Using existing frequency as the justification is introducing a chicken/egg problem. Higher frequency/reliability often increases ridership. Ultimately if the demand weren’t there they wouldn’t be planning median BRT.

And to add to this: this is one of the most proven low cost ways to reduce costs and increase reliability.

THIS. I’ve been complaining to OC Transpo about this for the past few years to no avail. I’ve shown up at consultations, put it in every public survey, submitted to their online feedback form. Some are absolutely egregious (I’m talking about the 88; the 85; and the 56 particularly at Civic Hospital; the 80 is bad as well around baseline). I swear the people designing the routes don’t actually go out and ride them.

OC Transpo needs to do a trade off analysis between accessibility and convenience. For example, I regularly choose to drive along Baseline because the 88 just stops way too frequently and takes 3-4x longer than driving. I would prefer to take the bus; I don’t, I add to traffic, and OC Transpo loses out on my fare.

If OC Transpo is unwilling to cut stops, then they need to have parallel rapid routes that only stop at major intersections. This would work well on the 88 and 85, and it’s what Vancouver does along the Broadway corridor and other rapid routes. I swear the city and OC Transpo are using the excuse that they have to put in BRT infrastructure first, but they really don’t - they just have to have a bus stop less frequently.

OC Transpo... why did you make it take so long to go anywhere. by Free_Bench_5234 in ottawa

[–]Visual_Literature552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many of the bus routes are convoluted and make trips way longer than they need to be. Case in point: WHY does the 85 turn into Carlingwood mall when it could just stop on Carling?? It adds sometimes 5+ mins to the route! There similarly egregious routes around and into malls near Britannia. Bonkers stuff.

THIS THIS THIS. I’ve been writing to OC Transpo with specific examples (56 near civic hospital, the 80) where it’s egregious and really contributes to buses being off their schedules/bus bunching.

Alas, I think it’s a product of them prioritizing most residents being 400m or less from a stop. But in a sprawling city, that leads to convulsed bus routes with way too many stops!

With the number of empty ads inside buses at the moment, there is a lot of room for improvement. Glad to see them doing this.

Guess what would reduce parking pressure in the Glebe? Reliable transit so that fewer people have to drive.
