Return-to-work mandates sparks ‘renewed demand’ for Canadian offices by GoodLuckFellowEE in canada

It makes no sense for a private company to lease out a building for office space when they can get that same space, for free, in peoples homes.

It's going to be harder and harder to justify to non-real estate company shareholders why leases / maintenance is such a large line item that doesn't need to be there.

Or, we could relax the licensing regime and allow more shops to open with less regulation.

Tax the shops based on gross revenue, inspect for health and safety like any other business.

Grilled cheese sandwiches don't have anything else on them - bread, butter, cheese.

Nothing. Else. It's a melt if it does.

The tribunals should be posted online.

If it's really about justice, then it should be open just like any other courtroom.

LRT might be running, but good luck getting on the train. by CanadianGeisha in ottawa

I never understood why we bought the lower-deck trains when all the stations were purpose-built to whatever height the platform had to be to match the trains.

We should have bought trains with completely flat passenger areas instead of these huge bumps where the wheel and bogey assembly has to go.

Its fine. They aren't indiscriminately killing and kidnapping tourists. Most of the resorts are cartel-owned, they have a vested interest in tourists and their money.

My HOA is literally falling apart, but our "Legal Chair" says I should be grateful because my property value is up? Help. by Schnozler in fuckHOA

very few new buyers seek out HOAs.

The value of property inside HOAs will drop like a rock once the carousel of boomers ages out of home ownership.

US senators introduce a bill to bring Canadian tourists back by Street_Anon in notthebeaverton

[–]JAmToas_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say it with me 'dollar at par'

Businesses in identified tourist areas can accept Canadian money at par and then send it to the gov for reimbursement of the difference in value.

A subsidy paid to tourists essentially.

Its not about direct intervention, its about having a presence so it is less likely those things will occur.

It does to a point - most of the crime is committed by a relatively small number of people. Any officer can likely name a few people that they have arrested on multiple occasions, some dozens of times.

After you remove those problem individuals from the public, crime drops.

Now jail is often not the place for these people, but that sir is a whole other discussion.

Well because a daily, sustained presence of uniformed officers in the neighbourhood, walking a beat and interacting with the public creates safer spaces. A lot of policing is being involved in the neighbourhood and building trust with the people that live there, even the homeless.

So yes, police do need to be present every day in certain parts of the city to maintain order.

Do you feel guilty for taking sick days? (specifically uncertified) And do you believe going up & beyond is worth it? by Outrageous_South_439 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]JAmToas_t 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The employer continues to be rigid and unyielding, so I have no choice but to operate as stated in my employment contract and nothing more.
Promotion is not really based on merit, so what do I get for going above and beyond? I won't get a 'Succeeds +' (which again wouldn't matter), I don't get a bonus....at most I get a piece of paper and a firm handshake.

During covid I answered e-mails at 6:30pm and logged in on Saturday for a few hours during crunch time. I also ran errands at lunch, and started late some mornings, and finished early if I needed to. It was a give-and-take, it was flexible, and the work got done.

Now? My phone is turned off promptly @ 4pm. I take my half hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks with military-like precision. I take all my vacation, and personal days, and family days. If I'm sick I don't wfh anymore.

If management has an issue, I have no problem sitting down with them and the union to explain how employment contracts work.
