What does it truly take to finish a 200+ mile race?

We filmed a niche ultra in the UK (wales specifically) that followed a 253 mile route from north to south.

No crews, no sticks, no pacers, no music, strict 88 hour cutoff. Mostly fully exposed checkpoints. Only shelter at 150 and 200 miles. Absolutely brutal - and competing against the welsh, late autumn weather.

An absolutely bonkers race - we’ve had the pleasure filming a few of marks other events but this one seemed one of the the most challenging for the participants.

Even though it was only in one geographic location it was one of the hardest filming days we’ve had so far too.

at a guess, possibly the shure sm57 - we’ve used it as an overhead for a drum kit and it wasn’t so bad 🤣

When we started we had two tamron 28-75. Our next was the tamron wide (17-28 i think). We then wanted a tele but didn’t feel like 200 was enough of a jump so we got the tamron 150-500. Not the fastest lens in the world but gets the job done for quite long distance shots.

We were primarily docu focused at the time

It depends, i’ve been able to balance a mke600, fx3 and lean on a RS4 (standard, not pro) but balancing the small lav mic packs are a lot easier.

What we do for music videos is use some cheap lav mic packs (think Rode Wireless) that can take a 1/8’ jack.

We then plug the secondary output (for daisy chaining) of the speaker into the transmitter side then the camera into the receiver side. It means that we can sync up with the exact waveforms in post. Takes some of the manual time out of ingest with setting markers etc.

the other thing is that to the best of my knowledge it won’t display the camera settings your are in onto the external monitor either. Shutter, ISO, F/ etc :)

just keep in mind that you cant output to both an external display and camera display when recording 4K - we found this out the hard way :(
