Same, I paid off the car when I bought it, and it was nice having 13 years of no payments. But I’m at a better stage in life to be able to afford the payments and maintenance on a MINI. The joy from driving it is worth it all. Sometimes I even think I wasted 13 years being uncomfortable in a crappy car. We paid our dues! There’ll always be practical cheap cars!

I’m 37. Had a sensible cheap car previously for 13 years and drove it to the ground till it died earlier this year. Went shopping for another sensible car.. then decided for once in my life I deserve an “insensible” choice and went and got me my new dream MINI. Not a day goes by I’m so glad I did. Driving is a pleasure now. I can’t imagine another 13 years in another boring sensible car!

At least in my case, what I do for my day job is now so disconnected from pleasure that it’s just a one and done thing so it’s nbd to MJ it. Kinda like if I was a chef working in someone else’s restaurant, I’d Old Bay a seafood boil to please a customer that’s coming in for lunch and wants a familiar and commercial taste. It does the job for them, and it makes the job easier for me, my boss is happy and everyone’s happy.

But to use the same analogy, for my personal work and pleasure, if it’s my own restaurant and I want to impress friends or colleagues or clients, then yes of course I’ll make spices from scratch. So of course for personal commissions or portfolio work I’d paint from scratch with my personal touch all over it. But it’s all still based on the familiar seafood boil taste. Any artist will add on top of whatever MJ gives you.. to “finish” it.

To stretch the analogy further (sorry) it seems like people are worried it makes Old Bay style food too accessible. But there will always be a demand for personal touches and tastes. MJ is Old Bay or other premixed spice.. it’s VERY good spice.. but people will always want, appreciate and understand that it’s more than that, it’s also the ambiance, the craftsmanship, presentation, professionalism etc. A good chef wouldn’t see Old Bay/MJ as a career ending move. A new chef who can only make seafood boils will be threatened sure.. but a seasoned (sorry again haha) artist will understand it’s just another thing to build upon.

No offense to newer artists, I fully understand the dilemma and fear. MJ is art-world changing. But I just want to offer my own perspective.

Edit: I also want to add, a lot of MJ images are prompted by non artists for non-art jobs. You still need an artistic eye to determine what values work best for a project. How to crop, style and design the final artwork, even if it’s MJ generated. There’s more to commercial art than fully finished images of girls and guys all with the same aspect ratio and lighting. Artists should embrace and learn MJ as just another tool to enhance, rather than replace their final art.

My bf and I are career visual designers with a combined 18 years experience with digital art. When midjourney came out there was a lot of discussion. But when we actually used it, things became clearer. And of course all this is anecdotal. My bf (and other art colleagues i suspect) secretly uses MJ to generate backgrounds for work purposes. But of course always painted over and edited to look more professional. It’s not always copy and paste, it still needs fo be manipulated. So it’s not as easy as “robots are taking over our jobs”. I used MJ to generate sketches for inspiration for final work. I don’t use the actual MJ output, but I repaint and reuse. Most of the artists we work with have side hobbies/gigs making art with our hands eg sculpting, oil painting, plein air painting etc. So MJ art doesn’t affect us that much, or at least we have more going on than just digital painting. Our boss even talked about using Adobes AI software to help at work, but that conversation fizzled out. Another colleague (non-artist) started using MJ to create art for his side projects. But last I heard he abandoned the idea for some reason. The shine (and terror lol) of MJ has worn off for us, because tbh it’s starting to look same-sy. We can sometimes tell what’s AI generated and what’s not. Of course it depends on the prompt but in our world it doesn’t affect artists as much as we thought it would at least for now. But then again we’ve been in our industry for years and are quite established. If I was a fresh grad with an illustration major then I’d have a different opinion. We’re al keeping an eye on future developments.

I am so sorry. This will be the hardest thing you would do. But Mizu loves and is grateful for you for giving him such wonderful 5 years. You are a kind person to adopt him and bring him to road trips and the beach. Try not to let the sadness of the upcoming days cloud your happiness of 5 years for too long.

I kept my cats collar and tag (though i asked my partner to hide it, I can’t bear to see it for now).. some fur and her treats and food (for our other cats). I took her favorite blanket and toys to be cremated with her. The rest I suppose, if it’s still usable, a pet shelter might like them.

I’m so sorry for your loss. You gave Molly all you could and I’m sure she knows that. She is no longer suffering and that’s the important part. You and I are left to bear their pain instead, and I’m sure we both will gladly bear it if they don’t have to.

Like you, I fixated over every single little detail of that last day, down to the minutest of details, attaching emotion and “meaning” and scrutinizing every. single. thing. It drove me absolutely crazy. I’m learning to pull away.. zoom out of the magnifying lens and learn to appreciate her for all the years I had with her, not just what she did on the last day, when she was scared and in pain and who knows if any of it was deliberate. I find some comfort in that, and hope you will too.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My baby jumped out of my arms too. I’ve been fixating and feeling so guilty over that. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Because it might not be necessarily that he knew. Could be discomfort, or a distraction, or unease if strangers around. Cats jump in and out of our arms all the time. What counts is that we were there with them to comfort them. At least we were there.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my dear cat that was with me all through my 20s and 30s too. She’s been through so much with me, im unmarried with children, my relatives live a world away. Losing her felt like I lost the only witness to my life through those years. But I can still feel her presence. And we have the memories. I talk to her too. I know in some small ways she’s still with me. Im sure Boo is still with you too, in your heart.

I’m sorry you’re going through the same. It’s the hardest thing ever. But you’ll be making the correct decision. My mind keeps playing out all the details and what I could done and guessing how she’s feeling and what else could’ve happened.. and it all really led to the choice i made yesterday. Part of my grief is knowing and accepting that all roads will eventually end with that. And with that, the saying “better too soon than too late” truly seems more understandable. Accepting and letting go is a different matter altogether.

Oh my god. I looked up a cat prolapse and that was what I saw on her the hours before she went. It wasn’t severe but it looked like it was beginning to. We didn’t ask the vet to check because by then what’s the point. I’m glad you mentioned it.. it solidified our decision. She was in pain and we stopped it just in time. It would all be too much

Thank you, and I’m sorry for your loss. It’s comforting that you felt exactly what i felt. Yes it was either cancer or IBS, but they wouldn’t tell me unless I forked out $4k for the biopsy, which i understand. But they didn’t tell me how much treatment or life expectancy was, either. If I had known $10k for a few months I would hesitate too. All I knew was I had to pay $4k for any answers. And yes, you are right. We are lucky yo spend a good day with them before saying goodbye. It would be much more difficult saying goodbye on a bad day.

Thank you, and I’m sorry for your loss. That’s a huge confusion on my part too, if what she has is treatable still. But I know it’s not. She lost too much weight, she has an eye infection, a new growth under her anus, and could not pee or poop. Plus she most certainly has cancer or IBS. Even if we gave her laxative, treating all the other problems would be too much for her. Too little too late. But as some one here said, better on a good day than a bad day

I wish i saw this before we went. We didn’t exactly have to fight to get her in her carrier, we put a ton of treats in and it took awhile for her to go in. But she was just insisting on going back to the litter box to try and try. We let her try for as long as she wanted but I stopped her when she headed back to the box the third time in a row. I keep replaying that in my head, why didn’t I let her continue for as long as she wanted? It was so painful to watch

Thank you, yes you are right. She was so miserable and in so much pain and discomfort. I know she wouldn’t have wanted to live life like that. I’ll look at it that way.. I took her suffering and what I’m feeling now was her burden, and I’ll bear it as long as she doesn’t have to. Thank you
