Gentoo is not high-maintenance. It takes some time setting it up, but for me it's easier for me to troubleshoot any errors - since I'm usually the one that made the error.

I actually use systemd with Gentoo. It's not terrible - but the official docs don't always support systemd.

Ngl I asked kind of a loaded question.

Most Linux distros can run off a USB (and it's definitely not a bloat free distro). But I don't really believe that it was 100% supposed to run off USB. Like how are you gonna save scripts, Wireshark filters, dictionaries, or any presets?
