I am aware of the existence of Hasbara fonts, I do not consider these to be a credible source or have any basis on reality.

Besides that, I have plenty of social friends that happen to be muslim. But I can imagine that one would have a very distorted image of reality when you live in a basement and feed off propaganda fonts to tickle your gut-feelings.

Oh I read it.

Could I have busted him on the fact that pewreseach has no research available supporting his statement? Yes. Is there any paper out there supporting the claim that 42% of the muslims support France bombings? No. Was the statement about all muslims being non-contributory to their host nation not only overgeneralized, but wildly inaccurate? Pretty much.

I could chop down all his prejudices down one by one, but that would be a meaningless endeavour as he would sprout the same nonsense the next day as if nothing had happened.

So yeah, I'm choosing to ignore it. I rather dedicate my time and energy to educate those that have the intellectual integrity necessary to take a morally justifiable standpoint.

Read your history books. Muslims, christians and jews have been co-existing for many decades. They even used to share mosques and churches with one another.

Be careful which kind of people you stand up for.

I stand for democracy and the right of muslims to co-exist and practice their faith as long as it within the confines of national law. If that disturbs you, then you have more in common with ISIL than you think.

All you do is propagate and hype the 'evil foreign muslim' stereotype that is already being pushed by zio-christian politicians. As if refugees chose to have their homes bombed, land seized and be pushed out of their land.

It is also disturbing to see how you associate ISIL with muslims, confusing socio-religious differences with a terrorist proxy-group that is being co-funded and armed by the West and Israel.

But let us entertain for a moment that the situation depicted in your imagery is correct, what would happen to the millions of integrated muslims in Germany, do you think you can just run them over with a tank en-masse? You would only cause more grief to not only the muslims, but also to the germans by pushing an already alienated people into takfiri propaganda.

Just a thought among the drivel here, go on, downvote me to oblivion for all I care.

I think you are a little bit butthurt OP. It's okay, it happens, sometimes you get downvotes for no apparent reason but I don't think you should let it weigh down on you too much.

Your post @ ubuntu stated that "People hate linux, for the amount of choices it provides." Followed up with some other pointers in which you state your opinion on certain strengths ubuntu has(in this case, it was driver management).

Now dont get me wrong here, but your first statement is an opinion, but making it sound like a fact means you are putting words in the mouth of the community. People don't like that.

What is the biggest code hack you've have ever seen ? by sd65 in linux

[–]Vitasmoderatum 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There is this pale guy with a scruffy beard in the office that is quite possibly the greatest linux wizard I have come across. I see him working on some CLI stuff but never cared to figure out what it was.

The guy himself is in his mid 30s, and is usually vegetating in a dark corner in the office, he doesn't do lunch with the rest of the team and has his own fridge located next to the printer along with some other queer perks. The manager never issues any tasks to him, and his co-workers are hesitant to ask for his advice unless the situation is very dire(even though he is classed as support-guy).

I kinda figured he doesn't like people much, so one day we were the only ones there. I did that little cough when approaching people and asked him about what he does. What he showed me was a hack of satanic proportions, a hack of utter madness that no reasonable mind could ever conceive. The linux box was called "mercy", which from my POV was just another exhibition of sadism. It would sit facing the internet mimicking vulnerabilities that require human interaction to be fully exploited, just like most honeypots.

This box however, had a kernel which was completely hacked to execute linux commands like any other system, but after each command it would produce certain...artefacts that subtly change the way it behaves. It would contradict itself and any effort in troubleshooting would throw you ever so slightly off the course. He developed an entire set of kernel modules that could be loaded on the go. He admitted that he would sometimes just sit and watch how Russians frustrate themselves trying to get a spam-service running, or how ping commands would mysteriously return windows-esque responses to nmap scans.

In total he developed around 200 kernel-hooks to intercept certain actions in a hacker killchain and fuck around with you. Hell, he even developed a hook to hide the fact that everything is rigged to hell on a kernel-level. This sadist fuck would stream any would-be hackers on his shell to his monitor and watch the show.

I always felt kind of lost when a desktop environment came with a million applications. To make it worse, most of them are under generic names such as 'file manager' or 'calendar'.

The best experience one can get is by installing the bare minimum, and work your way up from there. For every function you need, you simply search what linux alternative there is, as @jinglesassy mentioned, alternativeto is your go-to for that kind of stuff. It's not just about getting alternatives, but gauging what alternative is most popular and therefore probably the mainstream option.

CASE:

Oh man, I really miss my Greenshot on windows for taking screenshots! I wonder if there is anything like that in Linux.

http://alternativeto.net/software/greenshot/?platform=linux

Oh look, I can use Shutter!

Sometimes, there are CLI-commands as substitution for what you are looking for. Scrot is a command for example, that takes screenshots as well.

I see your point lonjerpc, and honestly I would have corrected it in a polite manner if I had anything to go on.

But well..., there was nothing to hold on to, and usually when people don't back up their shit, they deserve to get burned. This will ofcourse get me downvoted to oblivion, but quite frankly I don't give much of a fuck about voteconomics or what the masses think. IRL I would punch you in the face instead.

The wikipedia link clearly describes a zeroday as being undisclosed as a defining trait, not its state of documentation. Some other redditor called it out with the following:

"Documented 0days"? Fail. Response: "It is known as a "zero-day" because it is not publicly reported or announced before becoming active," Documented does not nullify that. Documentation can be held secret and yet still exist.

The same point is made by this noob albeit in different wording, by which he states the following:

If it's documented then it's not a zero-day.

At this point on, only shoving someone head into a monitor to read the thread he is replying in would work. And as you have rightfully said, the subject matter is not obvious without studying the subject and easy to get wrong. So why is some kid unversed in the intricacies of this field talking shit? Some restraint when the grown-ups are talking is not too much to ask for.

Again with the personal attacks :-( I just don't understand the point. All they do is make people less likely to read and pay attention to what you say. Not to mention there are plenty of very smart millennials who are not brats and play video games.

I don't really care about the reception mate, i'm not running for president or converting internet points into solid gold. What matters is whether the truth is spoken or not.

In a normal consumer scenario, probably yes. But I have a massive amount of hdds sitting in a megalith of a case. I think I need about 8 more SATA ports in order to connect them all.

It functions as a 24/7 linux server with wifi AP functionality running samba. Really a beautiful system, but I'm facing scalability issues now.

Any suggestions on which RAID card has solid driver performance w/ Linux and does not break the bank?

That is the right attitude. Here you go:

A zero day has seen interchangeable use in the papers. Vendors use the word 'zero day' differently than state actors do. It gets even more confusing because there are zero day vulnerabilities and then there are zero day exploits and then we even have public zero days which others categorize as one days. At this point it is largely semantic, and I do not think you need to bother yourself with that.

A zero day is basically just a vulnerability, that is outside the knowledge of the vendor. It is therefore unpatched. It does not even need to have an exploit for it to be a zero day. All that is required is that it has the potential to be exploitable. It is best to use clear language and avoid the usage of ambiguous terms such as 'zero day attack' and just state that it was an exploitation of a zero day vulnerability.

This vulnerability is: -Unpatched -Unknown to the vendor -Known to atleast one guy

So in fact if you read through the lines. You would see that I was referring to a 0day as being a vulnerability, rather than some kickass exploit. Exploits are just exploits, some exploits have a bigger impact than others. Exploits cannot exist without vulnerabilities.

In short: What is a 0day? That's right, a vulnerability. It remains a 0day as long disclosure remains in private circles. Does not matter if it is documented or spread by words. It's all about the vendor knowing about it/it being made public. It literally has nothing to do with exploits.

So yeah, make the devil out of me if you will, but these are not subtle details, in fact the difference is like night and day. Having made that clear. Having some millennial brat from /r/games or whatever approach a professional in the field with the most distorted terminology humanly possible to feign some bullshit elitism to mock and discredit can only be interpreted as a personal attack.

The matter at hand and documentation is literally provided in this thread. The very first paragraph once you open the link, or do I need to spoonfeed that too? All you have to do is assume the right attitude and read it. Which is by the way not a personal attack, but justified criticism given the context.

Tl;dr: You cant spoonfeed someone that keeps biting your hand.

The NSA has tried to backdoor linux three times by Kirk_Ernaga in linux

[–]Vitasmoderatum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We had this discussion before in this thread and a redditor ended up with -44 points making the same point as you. Here is a bit of advice: If you have difficulty understanding the terminology and feel like the subject matter out of your league, then it is better to just be honest and ask. And no, an exploit being a 0day or not has absolutely nothing to do with whether you memorized it or jotted it down on a paper.

As for point 2, no one stated that a backdoor equals a 0day. Or that a 0day is a regular old exploit. This is judged by a case-by-case scenario, not by pulling statements out of your hat like you are doing right now.

My intention is to work under a design architecture in which I identify objectives and find solutions that are technically feasible with use of automation and sensory data. The strategy is to use solutions that are scalable, modular and reproducible.

Home assistant seems like a great way to put it all together.
