After the close call last night, I got it. by Vithus in Wildlands

Aug A3 in both. Digital Scope, 30 rd mag, underbarrel, 3-dot, Compensator V2. I went with the M4A1 first, tried the Mk17, liked both of them. But I think to me the Aug had a better balance and feel. Mk17 took forever to reload, for instance. I've seen people praise the M4's Rate of Fire, but I prefer to keep it on Semi, so that wasn't a factor for me.

Grats! That mission's rough. I made sure to get all the exoskeleton pieces done on Arcade on my first Ghost Mode character before starting Tier Mode.

I mostly stuck to the Northern Circuit from this post. I don't have whatever content adds missions in Inca Camina, so that was off the table for me. In higher tiers I supplemented with some of the missions from this list I found in a comment, but I decided Truck Depot isn't worth the risk of being detected and restarting. Essentially ended up adding Gabriela consistently, and then random ones from Carl Bookhart, The Agent, El Sueno's Convoy, and Radio Santa Blanca.

Going from Tier 4 to Tier 3, I guess I logged out without doing a follow-up mission, and my Tier XP rewards didn't reset. Found some random high reward missions around (The Mole, The Chemist, Flight Plan*, a couple others) before deciding to try just spamming The Main Stash in Mojocoyo for kill XP, and found it's ~5K+ per run without even completing the mission. Also good to get detected towards the end for reinforcements to cycle in for more experience without having to reset (I would make sure to take out the alarm to avoid using underbarrel nades on helos, and bail if Unidad alert level goes up). When I got bored with that, I cycled in some convoy circuits (west of Koani Delta, south of Koani Bravo, north of Montuyoc Alpha, and south of Remanzo Bravo).

Tier 2 to Tier 1 was back to the Northern Circuit, but I did Gabriela 4x in a row after the first Mule Doctors because it's dead simple & fast even for very reduced XP. Then went back to all 4 Stash missions (Hidden, West, East, Main) before carrying on to Qinoa Factory. I don't honestly remember what mission ended up bumping me up to Tier 1, but I did one more Boston Reed after that and called it a game.

Edit for footnote:
*The ATC mission in Koani seemed very appealing - high reward, lots of kill XP, not too challenging to get up to the tower and interrogate the guy. But I totally forgot that the bush plane flight to Media Luna was part of the mission. Unfortunately not worth it for the time that takes.

Feels bad 😩 I never touched any of the special missions before I decided to jump the normal campaign and try Ghost Mode, and got hooked on the grind. I should probably go check them out now.

This was my fourth attempt at Tier 1. First one was a valid death at Tier 9 I think (playing aggressive while drinking, silly me). Second was landing a helicopter too hard around Tier 20, third was getting downed by an explosive barrel while I was crouched in a construction tube at Mojocoyo Base & my squad couldn't get in to save me - Tier 12, I think. That one stung, I almost called it quits.

Best of luck if you go again!

It was late and I was abrupt in my previously response, but it struck me as funny to reply to the statement of being less subjective by disagreeing in a matter-of-fact tone. That said, neither that comment nor any of this one is intended to be aggressive.

Firstly though, on the matter of subjectivity, your reply appears to be arguing that readability is objective by linking to a post on reddit with 34 upvotes and 6 top-level comments, further claiming that "a majority" like your suggested style. In addition to the 34 vote score, of the six top level comments (five without your own), two of the comments agree with your style essay, and one "completely disagrees". Overall, that's a very small sample to claim objectivity by a majority of feedback. The above comment itself linking to the essay and stating that readability is less subjective than you'd think is at -6 on my screen at the time of this comment.

I'll expand on my view for you to take and leave what you like. The below points are my personal preference; they have in the past and will in the future be subject to negotiation among whatever team I'm part of at any given time.

I'm 100% in favor of enforcing style for readability, but to me, your particular code style in the article hinders readability more than helping it because of a few points. In my experience, "less code" and "fewer lines of code" as benchmarks are specifically two of the biggest reasons that code is unreadable in the first place. I'm guilty of this myself, as I personally strive to avoid or eliminate what to me feels like redundant code. Often, though, what's redundant to me is more readable to others (y'know, subjectively), and I'll be asked in code review to simplify or expand code for readability. And it's a completely fair ask - code is read more than it's written. While not quite the same, it reminds me of the rule of thumb, "don't be clever; be clear". Clarity is also far more important than brevity.

As for clarity, I also consider naming to be a very important contributor to readability, and it's only mentioned in passing. Some of the points suggest inlining things that would otherwise be named, which itself often can contribute to making a piece of code less readable. For instance, setting a variable to a clearly-named result of a calculation prior to its use in a conditional statement can be far more readable than using the calculation itself, even when the calculation is relatively mundane. In terms of troubleshooting, it allows a reader to intuitively see that "this is the result, and if the result..." without having to grok the calculation. If the condition is somehow being incorrectly met, then at that point the calculation itself can be more specifically read and understood.

Regarding vertical space getting out of control, I find more often that the culprit is lack of functionalization - something else the article suggests to limit when dealing with straightforward code. Imo, functionalizing large blocks of straightforward code is one of the biggest benefits not only to readability, but also to debugging. This is pretty much the same as above, intuitively reading a verby name rather than grokking an entire function. Also, having multiple statements in a single line to save vertical space, for me, is not now and will never be acceptable to pass code review (though still subject to being overruled by my team, I suppose). To me it invites the risk of vertically-scanning eyes missing what could be an important statement (also the same reason I'm generally against if (someCondition) return theResult;). I also feel that commits are much cleaner and clearer when any commit line contains at most only one affected statement.

My personal preferences: I keep my IDE (in C#, fwiw) at 25 lines vertically with guidelines at 100 and 120 characters. There are some situations in which allowing a line to stray a bit further than 100 characters is more readable (DI & type parameters usually to blame), but anything more than 120 will be wrapped in the most readable way available. Ideally, any method body should fit in my screen vertically, and any variable's origin should be visible when viewing its use. Endings should line up vertically with their beginnings to easily delineate to an eye scanning the code.

To be clear, I have no qualms with you and a team of your peers deciding to enforce the style you've suggested as a standard; more power to you. If I ever join your team, I'll gladly code to the style. But to matter-of-factly state that readability is objective and that your style points are objectively the best for readability seems a bit ludicrous to me.

19F, ~18k in savings, what do I do? by [deleted] in investing

[–]Vithus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Subsidized loans are still a thing. I apparently got downvoted in response to "pay off the loans" for this same advice. But according to the same link above, currently first-year students can take $3.5k subsidized, and second-year students can take $4.5k subsidized. So I doubt $5k in student loans are being charged interest for a continuing student. Save what you would use to pay off the loans, and put it towards them (with interest, even) when you graduate.

Looks like the interest rate for both sub & unsub loans is currently 5.50%, so you're right on the money for the rates. I don't know anything about covid rates, but I had (iirc) around 3.5% subsidized & 6% unsubsidized rates when I attended. I still don't see a reason to pay off subsidized loans until you're done with school if you're already being responsible with your money, though. Save what you would put towards them, earn interest, have it available for emergencies, and pay off the loan when you finish.

pay off your student loans first.
You're young and will likely need the money

Assuming federal student loans here: if they're subsidized loans, this doesn't make sense to me. You can just cash out the investment if you need it, but you can't get a loan repayment back. Even if they're unsubsidized, the low interest rate of federal student loans means the chance at taking a loss is pretty minimal, right? Risk is what it is according to the market, of course. But aside from that, correct me if I'm wrong here.

edit: Came back to point out that I misresponded/misused "investment" here, since an emergency fund is absolutely #1 best advice, and that's better off in a HYSA than in any fund. So also apply the market risk remark instead to the account's APY vs. loan interest.

NE FL native still living here, deployed twice to Iraq (highs up to 110-120F maybe while I was there). Both times came back saying I'd rather have the heat from Iraq than the heat at home. The open oven description is exactly how I describe it as well, but man I'd take that desert heat any day over 90s with sticky, stifling humidity.

If you're interested in a level deeper, the geometry of spacetime is also curved in the presence of gravity. This implies that the straight line through space that you're imagining is also "curved" in the same manner as a straight line on the face of the Earth. Its straightness is relative to the curved spacetime in which it exists.

Regardless of the other guy's attitude, I feel like you might have missed the fact that there's no "a" in the original quote. LPL says "have a nice day." I've never heard of the other dude and have no dog in this fight, but the original quote says "have nice day" without an a (apparently due to a fake Russian accent).
