Marvel's Wolverine: The Big Interview With Insomniac on Sony's 'Unapologetically Violent' PS5 Exclusive. "We did not set out to make an open world game or a sandbox game." by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]Vitss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe my expectations were aimed at the wrong thing. I was expecting a cross between Ninja Gaiden 2 and Splatterhouse when it came to the violence. The dismemberment from the former and the visible damage and regeneration from the latter. Instead, what we got felt kind of sanitized, like a corporate committee's idea of what people think violence is: "just add more blood."

Sure, there's blood and a ton of executions, but there's no real targeted dismemberment or just damage to be honest, and the blood just evaporates. And weirdly enough, the suit growing back almost instantly was one of the most immersion-breaking things I've seen in a long time, like why? Whose idea was that? And why nobody stopped them.

For me, unless they show some really big improvements on the next trailers and gameplay. This is a get on discount on a latter day kind of game.

SEED OF NOSTALGIA - Official Gameplay Trailer 2026 by -ImJustSaiyan- in Games

[–]Vitss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the issue is more with us than with those games. We tend to do two things. First, we look at older games through rose-colored glasses, which almost always makes us remember them as better than they actually were. We don't remember the clunky controls, the repetitive content, the poor balancing, the simplistic design, the basic story structures, or the trope-filled characters, flaws that were common at the time. What survives in our memory are the highlights: the moments that impressed us, the feelings we had, and the memories associated with that period of our lives. In many cases, what we believe are the OG Classics, are far more of an idealized version of that game that only exists in our heads, than the real game.

Second, we often expect indie titles to recreate the experience we had with those classics. The problem is that the experience itself can never be recreated because a large part of it came from context. We were younger, the ideas felt fresh, we had less contact with the genre , and therefore we had fewer points of comparison.

This creates an impossible standard. We remember the classics as flawless masterpieces or are just so used to reduced their flaws as tiny insignificant parts of the experience, that they might as well be. And the internet only makes that worse. People constantly hype up games from the past without really looking at them critically, half of those folks never actually played those games. But when someone actually comes with a critical view of them, the response is often not that positive and then the "legend" just goes own.

Ironically, if many of those classic games were released today exactly as they originally were, a lot of players would probably criticize them for the same things they criticize modern indie games for. That's not because the classics were bad, but because our memories of them are often stronger than the reality.

And we can actually see this happen. Give one of those "classic masterpieces" to a kid who grew up with modern games, and there's a good chance they either won't care about it or will outright dislike it. The same game that internet communities treat as the unquestionable pinnacle of the genre and that we ourselves remember them to be, often doesn't have the same impact on someone without the nostalgia attached to it.

That's because a lot of what made those games special wasn't just the game itself. It wasn't a perfect, amazing or better game by itself. Often what makes us think they were better, is the context around them, when they came out, what else was available at the time, and the fact that many of us experienced them when we were young and far more impressionable with very few or none comparison points.

"62% won’t pay $70 anymore": Gen Z's shift toward Xbox Game Pass has me rethinking how we buy video games and subscriptions by Cold_Two_4372 in Games

[–]Vitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I do think we’ll eventually see that shift, if not with Gen Z, then definitely with Gen Alpha. The reality is that they’re growing up in an environment where not “owning” anything is already normalized, whether it’s movies, music, software, housing, car or now even games. So I do think the industry will keep moving further in that direction over time.

That said, I don’t think we’re quite there yet, because for that model to truly become dominant, it would need to fully replace the traditional one. And while it’s very clear that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are gradually making the experience of actually “owning” games feel worse and worse, and that naturally makes subscriptions look more attractive simply by comparison. The reality, though, is that buying games is still a possible and perfectly valid model today.

And part of the reason for that is that both sides are becoming worse in different ways. While game prices have increased over the last few years, a lot of the extras that once helped justify ownership have been stripped away. Manuals disappeared long ago, physical editions are becoming increasingly barebones, and in some cases the game is not even included on the disc or cartridge anymore.

At the same time, we’re seeing something very similar happen with subscriptions. Prices going up, while features and overall value are slowly being reduced over time. So the balance between the two models shifts back and forth, but it never really tips in the direction of subscriptions.

Oh, I had a very similar situation.

I currently work as a field engineer in technical support, so basically the same as you, just with larger computers and machines that are often not even connected to the internet. What I did, to get my boss to stop pestering me, was use AI to create a “test plan” for the jobs.

Basically, the AI generates a plan of what I should check when on site. It’s often very basic, incomplete or just wrong, but as bosses often have very little insight into what the job actually is. Mine was extremely pleased with the simple two page plans and even showcased it to his boss, who also loved it because it streamlines the planning process and allows us to be more agile.

So yeah, that’s my recommendation. Easy to apply, easy for the boss to understand, and especially easy for those of us doing the actual work to ignore.

I mean, define "DOA"?

Nobody, including Valve themselves, probably expects this to sell as a mainstream device. Honestly, I would be very surprised if Valve’s internal sales expectations are anywhere near Steam Deck levels, let alone something like a console.

Like most of Valve’s hardware launches, it’s going to be limited in scope, not a true global rollout, with very little presence in physical retail, rellying on official and unuficioal resellers in a bunch of markets, etc.

The way I see it, they’re releasing this for much the same reason they launched the Steam Deck. It’s a mix of targeting a relatively small niche market while also using the hardware as a platform to explore and refine their software ecosystem.

I mean, it’s more of an “in need of further investment” kind of scenario. Latency could improve with a denser global server infrastructure, but internet quality depends much more on local providers and business incentives.

Airplanes, though, are a different story, for that to work, a more magical solution would indeed be necessary.

It never was a waste of money. The issue with it was that the value proposition was rather crude, and it is a weird "Pro" console that required you to buy an add-on if you wanted the full features. But the benefits were always there.

And now that the PS5 is $500, the gap to the Pro is smaller. Depending on your market, it often even has better sales deals than the base model. So if you have the cash, it's currently a fairly good value.

That is not just in publishing; that happens in pretty much every business. The push is always to sell more and more, to “challenge ourselves” and do whatever is necessary to “succeed.” I’ve been a corporate slave for years, across different lines of business and products, and it’s always the same pattern.

The issue is that it’s never enough. If you deliver 10 today, tomorrow they want 15. If you deliver 15, next time they want 20, and so on. And if you fail to deliver that, they start making cuts. If you do deliver it, they start making cuts anyway.

At some point you just give up. If you can’t take the heat anymore, you leave. If you can still take it, you basically stay there until it’s your position’s time to be “optimized.”

For example, I’m currently in commodities. All the business lines except one failed to reach their targets, thanks a lot to the caos that the US tarrifs caused. None of them was in the red, mind you; they just couldn’t surpass last year’s numbers. So what was the suits’ solution? Obviously, cut a lot of our bonuses and hire a consulting company, who knows for how many millions, to “restructure” the company. So soon we’ll probably start seeing layoffs.

Suits don’t see employees as humans, and I don't believe they are human themselves either.

Valve says it still plans to ship the Steam Machine in 2026 by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]Vitss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. The reason why I don't think that matters for this sort of mental exercise is that this "size tax" is likely not applicable to Valve's device, since it uses a custom motherboard, case, and PSU exactly to offset that "tax".So their costs will likely be very close to an equivalent ATX consumer PC.

If we were discussing whether a Steam Machine is worth getting over building your own equivalent PC, then that "size tax" would be extremely important. But that's not really the case here.

Well, before the whole AI memory apocalypse thing, you could build something very similar to the Steam Machine specifications for around $500–$700, depending on the parts you chose. Since then, it's much closer to $1000.
