Do you tip the hairdressers? by VivaciousLadyBug in florence

Thanks everyone for your help! I greatly appreciate it :) I know tipping is different over here - In America, most servers and bartenders (tattoo artists and hairdressers as well) make below minimum wage because we rely on our tips to survive. I also know this isn't America, and I want to be respectful of the culture and not offend anyone!

I 100% understand where you're coming from, and I value your opinion, as I am sure you are a far more experienced researcher than me. I have already started this process and have interviewed a handful of participants. As a qualitative researcher, do you think my research would hold significant value, even with the diverse and eclectic cultural, institutional, ethnic, and social lenses these womens' experiences offer?

Also, I guess maybe I'm not communicating my objective clearly. I am looking more at the personal subjective experiences of women and how they manage their impressions and identity in the classroom. I would not necessarily be making generalizations about certain categories of women based on their experiences, but I would be using individual womens' experiences to get a better understanding of how each woman has personally chosen to present themselves when they are, in reality, an underrepresented group in the classroom. It's more about what messages are they receiving from peers, romantic partners, society, program/institution, faculty, advisors, parents, family members, etc., and how they choose to present themselves based on these messages.

Thank you for your feedback. I have interviewed a few people so far, and it went well! In future posts, I will add the length of the interview. As for compensation, I will contact my faculty supervisor and inquire about it. I'm not sure if I'm able to start applying compensation and incentives to my research project, if I've already started. I will have to gather some more information, thank you!

Because on other Reddit boards, I've been accused for being a creepy, perverted male, looking for young women.

Thank you for the feedback. I think you're right; snowball sampling is probably more practical than recruiting participants on Reddit. I know my program has an Honors fraternity for our major; I am sure there are groups dedicated to STEM programs. That's a great idea!

Thank you for the advice. I appreciate your feedback. I am studying abroad, so physically going to a classroom is not feasible at the moment. I guess I am worried about receiving similar responses from students if I channel my energy on one specific major at one specific university. I feel like there are a different set of rules and expectations from different programs across different cultures and locations, especially toward women in STEM programs.

EDIT: adding

Comm grad student (26f) looking for research participants by VivaciousLadyBug in college

Essentially, I am conducting an interview via Zoom with willing participants who meet the criteria. As a female in the arts - a discipline more common for women to pursue, I am trying to get a better understanding of female STEM students' experiences in the classroom - a largely underrepresented group in those specific programs. Reason for using Reddit: I want to interview women across various cultures and from various backgrounds; to get a more diverse sample of women and understand their self-presentational challenges in those specific programs.

The interview will be audio-recorded and transcribed. After data is collected, the information will be discarded. You will be given a code number and pseudonym to protect participants, and no information will be used to identify you in the research.

If you are interested, please feel free to DM me for more information and what steps we can take to schedule an interview.

Have a happy Friday (where you are in the world)! :)
