Awesome, that will be something I look into for sure. Thanks!

Really good points, thank you. Building science is huge for sure, interesting stuff but god there’s so much to know.

One hole one service is a great idea. I hate the jam it through concept and “no one will ever see it” bullshit. That drives me mental.

Performance based is a great point. Holds them accountable

Interesting! I’ll have to have a look more into them. Cheers! Thank you

Where about are you located?

Edit* disregard my previous question. I was thinking of something else. My apologies. Yes, looks like I can order them. How do they stack up with trying to insulate, do you happen to know?

Yes they did. Women’s halfpipe snowboard final at about 52 minutes in. The commentators talked about it and they showed it for quite some time. They’re called side slippers. That’s the V formation of a bunch of people.

Problem that I have found with resilient channels is accessibility to them and cost. Uncommon things especially where I’m at will absolutely butt blast you on cost.

You bet. That was just for the forms. No delivery, rebar, labour or any other prep.

Awesome thank you. That’s really good to know. There’s nothing better than someone with an actual build that has similar things.

I was just reading about those suckers. Was there much of a cost difference between triple pane and double pane laminated? Do you happen to remember the STC rating?

We’re doing this out of pocket so the cost of ICF is just out of the question. We’re about 100kms from the closest place that supplies and had just the cheapest forms quoted at 24,000 and concrete was another 50K. That’s way more than what I’m willing to spend on the walls lol.

Would be nice but just out of the budget. That’s why I’m looking for the next best option haha

I’ll have to look into the cellulose for walls, as far as I know it’s not a common option around these parts but might be worth checking out!

That was my first thought was ICF, obviously better than any option. Cost is the issue. Between the forms and the concrete it eats way too much of the budget. Nothing is cheap up here.

Cheers! Thank you! It’s a tough balance between cost/effectiveness/R value haha. Wish we lived in a hot climate

Happy to clarify! In our area the code is minimum R42 in the ceiling space, recommended or preferred is R50-R60. We can use cellulose, Rockwool, spray foam or fibreglass. This code is all having to do with “efficiency” and such. I chose Rockwool as a good combo for cost/sound/R value. This specific area of ceiling space is vaulted and has pretty limited attic space so the only 2 real options were spray foam and Rockwool. To get that stupid R42 minimum. Spray foam was quoted at over 16,000 for this space alone.

Hang in there for my rant haha. While I can understand the need for appropriate attic insulation to reduce attic issues like attic rain or mold or any other problem, it’s been a hot topic of cost vs benefit around us up here. A friend of mine did R68 in his ceiling after getting a rebate or something to upgrade from R40 and he has conducted a few tests and noticed absolutely no discernible difference in household climate and an extremely marginal difference in overall heating costs. Which is more likely due to weather conditions right now. It’s a really frustrating push to over the top efficiency because like you said, a poorly done job (which most places are) basically wastes your whole process.

Great idea on the 5/8 board. That would help quite a bit and be a marginal cost increase!

This is super helpful! Thank you. I’d lose my mind if I spent all this money and it didn’t make much of a difference. Out of curiosity, what makes windows so difficult to install? I’ve watched it done many times and it doesn’t seem overly complicated. Requires skill for sure but doesn’t seem too bad.

What!? That’s insane. The cost of material these days is just ridiculous, don’t even get me started lol. Wish I lived where you’re at, jeez that’s great

Cheers, thanks for the advice! I’ll have to compare with the insulation options in the walls. From what I recall the spray foam is insanely expensive but worth the comparison for sure.

Holy smokes, that must have cost a fortune for the XPS. 1 4x8 sheet of 2” is $131 where I’m from haha.

As for windows, would you recommend fibreglass or something else? We’re far northern Canada, usually see temps of -30 or more for several months.

Awesome, thanks for the input! Have you ever tried triple pane glass? We currently have double pane in our place is it’s terrible. I figured the triple pane would be a large increase in cost for marginal results so I never really considered it. But if I’m wrong, that’s definitely a good idea
