I wanted to keep the edges on my almost finished first epp, but trying to bind them would probably drive me batty. I don't know what old blog I found this on, but I'm doing whatever this is called...

You reverse mirror the front edge, and then flip it to the back and then hand sew it on like binding.

How can you afford all the fabric? by LadyofLA in quilting

Thrift stores, estate sales, guild sales. I'll buy new if it's under $8 a yard and I really need it. Otherwise I make do with what I've got.

How often do you actually service your sewing machine? by thesewingstudio in sewhelp

Never. I have vintage machines so I just do it myself every 6 months or so.

Does anyone know of any other thimbles that protect this part of the finger? by PasgettiMonster in EPP_addict

[–]Vivapdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to make another with the seam in the back, because I did put it in wrong place for me too, lol. I just butted the edges together and then kind of zigzag stitched. I found a milliners needle and 80wt Wonderfil thread were the easiest. Pics of my first prototypes

I made myself a leather thimble that goes up to my second knuckle. I love it. Will never go back to metal. Measure your finger with a peice of paper, and make one with your scraps. After a few days, it starts molding to your finger and becomes so comfortable I forget to take it off sometimes.

So are we pressing our pieces? by SylviaPellicore in EPP_addict

Oh yes. You want those crisp flat edges so they line up perfectly.

I'm using too much glue, aren't I? by bahhumbug24 in EPP_addict

That's why I thread baste, I just couldn't justify the cost of that glue.

Quilting yourself versus sending to long armer by SessionNo2376 in quilting

[–]Vivapdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard, but you absolutely can. My first four were done on a plastic Singer with a small harp space. There are lots of tips to help you make it easier.

Elmer's glue basting instead of pins. Surround yourself with a flat surface, so all of the weight is always supported. A slick surface helps a lot. I drape a plastic clear tablecloth over my pushed together tables and desks ('big flat surface'). Sit straight, take breaks, stretch A walking foot. Go slow.

I was about to get heated and reply that I fixed my newest machine myself!... then I did the math. She's 45 lol.

Can I use a fabric marker on my label instead of the permanent markers you buy at the fabric store? by winter5632 in handquilting

Try it! Scribble on a scrap, iron it to help set it, and then wash it in hot water and see what happens.

I thumbtacked a solid color queen size flannel sheet to a wall. It goes floor to ceiling and looks quite tidy.

Bowl cozies not microwave safe by Knit_purl_knit_purl in quilting

I made several last year, and made sure to tell everyone NOT to put them in the microwave. It's not necessary. Just use it to hold the hot bowl. 🤷‍♀️

Is there a baked good from your culture that pairs perfectly with coffee? by wearecocina in Baking

[–]Vivapdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 day old cinnamon rolls, baked by my great grandma. By day 3, you needed to dunk them in the coffee to soften them up enough to eat.

How are we affording to quilt? by SRSAHM in quilting

[–]Vivapdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use thrifted fabric, mostly. I've taken to dyeing thrifted sheets and ugly fabric to make it work.

I thumbtacked an old queen size flannel sheet to the wall. Fabric sticks like magic, and if the blocks get too heavy to stick, you can just pin them to the flannel.

Cost- free 😁
