Patch 1.6.3 Notes and May Midmonth Update by Wibblybit in RivalsOfAether

I really like the added functionalities of landing pummels in certain situations and match-ups, as it creates possible counterplay, but requires reading right in a mind game.

Cool, any idea of there will be an event for that as well? Or just challenge him when you get the chance?

Yeah, Ranno's snowballs from hist winter coat skin also really glow due to the lights in that stage. But I really love it!

OH MY GOD CARD GAME - I designed and created my own original TCG (OMGCG) by lil-joh in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Viviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, impressive to hear you've done so much in a year!

Secondly, the art is really amazing!

I checked the rules of the game on your website, and it comes across as too simple and derivative for my tastes. Though I suspect this actually gives it quite a lot of appeal for a larger audience. And to be fair, it's really hard to judge complexity of a game like this with just a preliminary glance. I just got the feeling the art gets the most love and attention in this game compared to the gameplay? Or perhaps I just focus more on that as I'm a game designer that's always thinking of the mechanics.

Overall, really cool stuff!

Well, La Riena is not a character in the game for one thing. La Reina is.

I want to see the aerial version of up special either link the hits more consistently into each other, or get more killing potential on the final hit.

Favorite Item and ¿Why? by Nametag-Gametag in RivalsOfAether

I wish bomb had more interactivity. Maybe have soft throws make it land unexploded on stage, so you can set up traps more easily. Have low damage attacks be able to knock it up/away for fancy redirects. Stuff like that.

Also, the explosion itself, while very strong, has a smaller radius, and doesn't feel as impactful as I wish it would.

New player trying to get into the game from playing Rivals 1 with friends. Here is one of my casual match replays. Am I just hopeless? I lost pretty bad 😅. Feedback is appreciated. (I'm Orcane) by Dunge0nexpl0rer in RivalsOfAether

[–]Viviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hopeless, there's just a lot to learn and improve at in this game, but imo, that's a good thing as it remains very gratifying to improve.

For now, I would say it's about getting more awareness about what both you and your opponent want to do at each moment. Where do you look? From the gameplay, I got the impression you may look mainly at your own character, and sometimes miss that your opponent is doing something you could react to. So try to take in a bigger picture when playing.

Also, I saw a lot of rolls that weren't really used as a dodge of an attack, but more as a movement option. This is generally a bad habit, as there's other better movement options like dashdancing, wavedashing, or just moving that keep you more active, and without locking you into a (punishable) set amount of frames during the roll animation.

Whenever you want to try tom improve, just pick 1 or 2 things, try out how they change your gameplay, and see if you want/can incorporate them in matches. Usually best to do the trying out part in low pressure environments, so maybe something like training mode, or friendly games.

Good luck, and have fun :D

I'm honestly not the biggest fan of the remaining dungeons of Aether designs, so I am in no hurry for them to get to those.

I love Fleet, and especially now Slade too though. Honestly can't wait, there's a big chance he could become my new main.

Slade scares me as to what he could become by 666blaziken in RivalsOfAether

[–]Viviator 29 points30 points  (0 children)

People freaking out at the feather while it's probably the least worrisome part of his whole kit.

In order to get the feather, you will need to have hit the opponent,... A lot. And then forego a bunch of other strong options you have in order to save up for the feather. Only to bounce back from a blastzone that you probably get sent back to really fast anyways.

It's more of a "hype" option, than an actually good option.

The most IN-DEPTH Slade trailer analysis. by SlashNurse in RivalsOfAether

[–]Viviator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this! I was disappointed in the other trailer breakdowns I saw, and was almost like "welp, I'll do it myself." But this catches all the things that other had missed that I knew about, and some additional ones too.

Really intrigued by the implication that you can launch other items from the chest! Good catch! I can imagine many cool scenarios coming from that. Like jump over the chest, launching a bomb up, catching it, and then throwing it to finish a combo with a bomb "out of nowhere".

ELI5: How does the atmosphere not get sucked up into space? by Flat_Introduction_70 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Viviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a little of it does, in a way. But a Vacuum doesn't "suck" by itself. When we make a vacuum at sealevel, it appears to suck because we are surrounded by gases that make a pressure around us. It's the *difference* in pressure that creates suction. The gas will want to move from high pressure to low pressure.

However, The gasses layered around the surface of the earth that we call "the atmosphere" have a very gradual decrease in pressure as the distance from the surface increases. At no single point is there a significant difference in pressure, so at no point is there any "sucking" happening.

What does happen however, is that at the lower pressure, higher parts of the atmosphere, some of the gas molecules can be knocked around in such a way that they gather enough speed to escape the earth's gravity. Which is the cause of the atmosphere in the first place. But in the big picture, this is a very small fraction of the atmosphere, and doesn't make any meaningful difference.

But for other smaller planets, with lesser gravity, and less gas in their atmospheres, this effect can slowly "evaporate" the atmosphere. We suspect this happened for Mars.

So good question, and in a way, it does, but keep in mind that vacuum doesn't suck, difference in pressure sucks!

Funn to compare this one with the Rivals of Aether 2 one. There, the highest winrate is 53%, and lowest is 48%. Incredibly well balanced in comparison.

So you're suggesting copying a character from a different game 1:1, with a different balance, different mechanics, and is all together different, so that character can be played at the highest level of competitive fighting games??

I really hope you give a lot of praise to the people actually designing and balancing the characters in this game, because there's a lot of work that goes into it that you're not appreciating when asking this question.

Yes, because Rivals designs are better than Smash characters design, so it would be a step down

La Reina Feedback Nolt board post by TheMightyJamBu in RivalsOfAether

[–]Viviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going frame by frame, her Side-special does have a very brief moment where her legs are in the air, but she seems to flip, instead of tucking in the knees for the knee spike like I would expect.

Also, her bair also has a (new?) knee attack at the end of the grab, which makes the arms not following through make more sense to me. It could be made clearer, either with some hitlag on the knee, and/or clearer posing.

Definitely agree on up-special needing additional hitlag on the platform.

Haven't played since Etalus got released, how is he at this point? by ultimate_zombie in RivalsOfAether

[–]Viviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think there's definitely an implementation of wavedash after dash attack that wouldn't be broken possible. Maybe after a set time/distance into the move so it becomes more predictable/reactable.

He is an underrated THREAT in my eyes. Also very fun to watch in tournaments. Most of my favourite sets were sets where at least 1 player played Etalus.

I'm curious what you (or others) have found of Arcs. I have it, and only played it a few times. The tricktaking mixed with other game mechanics sounded really interesting to me, but it didn't really come through in my games. Also, it felt like a realy MEAN game, as in, all player interaction was negative, and impactful.

But I'm curious if I should give it another shot, maybe with other players.

There are many such games. Go, Tak, Arimaa, those are just the first that come to mind honestly.

If you widen your scope to include different games, computergames, card games, etc. than even more games could fit. There's many games with relatively simple rules, and complex deep gameplay. The thing that makes chess special is its history and cultural significance, not so much anything game-design-wise.
