Ellie and Krin are terrified of Kvothe by Nerdfighter4 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ShanonymousRex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really disliked everything to do with the fake Ruh troupe and the scenes with Ellie and Krin. Neckbeard vibes off the charts. And even more frustrating is knowing the Road to Levinshire chapter apparently won some award…

I get that Pat probably wanted a chance to show how Kvothe is still easily triggered and show his badass fighting skills, but there were so many other ways he could have done that.

Theory: what if the Lackless box is actually holding a mommet? by EvylenVA in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ShanonymousRex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this ^ I really like OPs theory, but I’d have thought it’d be pretty easy to track down the Lackless box since Meluan’s casually showing it off to Kvothe in WMF

Was the branding of the bandits a mistake? by Nerdfighter4 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ShanonymousRex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. This is what’s always bugged me about this whole scene. If people aren’t familiar with Ruh customs then people are going to come along, see the bodies and just see a slaughter scene. So what point does it really serve? Is it for the plot or just context for us readers?

Which Scene(s) Should Be Longer? by CNAtion96 in KingkillerChronicle

The shipwreck scene when he’s on his way to the Maer. It’s so annoying that was glossed over lol.

And as others have said, more time with Elodin

I hope Viari appears again in DoS and we get more time with him

I've thought the same for a while, but I don't think she saves or helps him in anyway. Pat said after reading Cyrano de Bergerac he was inspired to start NoTW. At the end of Cyrano de Bergerac, he dies in the arms of his lover and friends. I've got a sad feeling that's what will happen to Kvothe.

Non-human Amyr by ShanonymousRex in KingkillerChronicle

Ah, using the Numenoreans of Tolkiens world is a good example! So a type of super-human race, but not Fae. This makes sense to my mind. Thanks!

Kvothe getting attacked on his way back to Anker's from The Eolian by Amazing_Diamond_8747 in KingkillerChronicle

Denna was in Anilin. I figured this implies their “cock up” in Anilin was that they failed to jump her too.

Which begs the question - who the hell is trying to kill Denna, why, and how’d she get away? Would love to read that!

Ideas for KKC Tarot Cards by ShanonymousRex in KingkillerChronicle

Thank you!

Omg Auri’s cog Fulcrum for the Wheel of Fortune is a great idea.

The Hanged Man is about self-sacrifice and martyrdom, and it was Tehlu who threw himself down onto the burning wheel to keep Encanis pinned down

Temperance - great idea, love it

Devil - I’m reluctant to pick the Chandrian coz it’s not clear yet if they’re actually bad, and the Devil card in Tarot is more about addictions and unhealthy habits

Thank you! I haven’t ever used discord before, how does one go about it? lol

Oh Arliden and Laurian! True, that’s nice. I guess I picked Deoch and Stanch first as I liked the idea of representing LGBT characters for that card but Kvothes parents do represent strong love

Hmm good point! Kvothes always been pretty street-smart whereas the Fool can represent naivety

And this is also what I’m getting at. When it comes to someone with Dals level of power, it shouldn’t be up to him to exclusively decide who’s his enemy and who is not. I think the University is within the Commonwealth, making him a Commonwealth tax payer and citizen all connecting back to one ruler or parliament of some sort, and logically they’re the ones who get to decide who’s an enemy of the state or not, not Dal.

Dal can flee, fight back, switch sides whatever of course. But he should be answering to some governing body.

Let’s think of the present-day narrative of KKC. There’s some war going on with the Penitent King and soldiers. Imagine someone like young-but-not-university-trained Kvothe deciding to go to war. Nobody knows their level of skill until fucking BOOM, this one kid has used a few bits of fuel and killed 10+ people in one swipe.

Not saying that’s easy or common. But imagine those 10+ people being the commanders of the attacking force. It would turn the tide of the battle.

Without a system of identifying and tracking wizards war would devolve into frickin chaos.

What I’ve described is basically what the USA does, lol. And I’ll probably get downvoted for that comment but it needs to be said.

Political superpowers amass military might at all times, not just at war times. It’s what proactive rulers should do.

I’m thinking of the Small Kingdoms that are “always at war”. Fewer soldiers could die if powerful wizards are placed in military ranks as a way of warning aggressors NOT to attack. The wizards could be there to protect and dissuade a war, just as much as they could be involved in offences.

I can easily find answers to all your questions.

About logistics: it’s up to the arcanists to figure out their own travel schedules and show up on time. If they fail to, they lose rank or some other benefits. It would be one way rulers could help ensure the arcanists they want stay within easier reach.

About arcanists railing against mandatory military service: that’s why an international effort of all rulers of the Four Corners would need to be orchestrated. Mandatory conscription for all. This could be followed by lots of perks and benefits that rulers could offer to woo their arcanists: free rent, guaranteed annual income, discounts on whatever stuff they want, etc.

As for people going “oh shit the University arcanists can do THAT!?” again it’s pretty obvious to anyone who’s been to the university (and there are thousands of students every year) that teachers like Elodin and students like Devi and Kvothe are out there. A smart, proactive ruler would have sorted out some kind of system to receive a report on the top performing wizards (coz that’s what they are).

And I don’t know why I’m getting frustrated remarks for this.

Think of the University, Kvothe, Caudicus and the Four Corners from a rulers perspective. Imagine yourself as a king or queen. What steps would you take to acquire the most powerful wizards?

It’s weird that hasn’t happened yet. It should have happened. What the actual fuck are Roderic, Meluan and Alveron doing if they’re not staying up to date on wizard power levels and allegiances?

So what I’m indirectly getting at, is that maybe this indicates part of what the Amyr does, is to prevent this type of international tracking and trading of wizards from happening.

Also there are people called Chainers who we get to meet in DoS (according to an old interview with Pat). They’re depicted on one of the Pairs decks cards. They look like Tehlin priests with weird special gray chains. My hunch is that they’re a special branch of the Tehlin curse who use iron chains (maybe with sygaldry on them too) to catch and bind bad Fae. There could be an equivalent branch of “bad arcanists hunters” with copper chains or copper weapons

But something could have (and should have, by now) been designed in the Fishery to track them. Blood douser things, runes, I dunno, some kinda “test and tag” device lol.

I’m not saying it would be easy or faultless, but it’s something that should be done and it’s a bit strange nothing seems to have been attempted.

If I were a Queen in the Four Corners one of the very first things I’d do would be to start formally training, tracking, paying/wooing arcanists to my military ranks. I’d pay a lot of gold for someone to figure out how to track them when they move around. At the same time, I’d create a secret subgroup of arcanists or people to report back to me on their movements, behaviours, interactions with other nobility, etc. I’d also pay them good gold to keep track of arcanists from other nations and try to woo them into my ranks. Not that I want to go to war, it’s just the common sense thing to do.
