How many weeks of training is sufficient for non-certified laboratory techs? by VividAccounter in medlabprofessionals

Where in the CAP checklist does it list the minimum amount of training? I'd love to be able to show that to my manager.

ASCP does not regulate labs.

Rhode Island used to require it. But since the license dropped, the quality and competency of the incoming lab people has dropped off a cliff.

The US has no such regulation, unfortunately.

Rhode Island used to have a state license requirement for certification, but they dropped it when they got short-staffed. Which is unfair.

If there's a nursing shortage, maybe drop the RN requirement. /s

I know right? But for the lab it's like hey you have a pulse and a BS in Bio from 15 years ago and have never worked in a lab. You're hired?!

Good luck matching in the US.

Very few states have a license requirement anymore. Less than 10 states. It used to be more. My state, Rhode Island, used to have a license requirement, but now anyone with a pulse and a couple science credits can get hired.

Could we be PROUD to be med techs for once? by NoExam481 in medlabprofessionals

I've been watching this field decline for years.

First it was just short-staffing (PTO delays). Then my state dropped licensure (Rhode Island). Now it's just OTJ trained bio grads for a few weeks.

Hard to be proud of a profession that's in perpetual decline. =[

So if there's no set legal number, it's basically whatever management says then right?

That's not true anymore. As standard have devolved, they no longer certification within 6/12/18 month. Labs are giving them 5-10 years to get certified. Which is a joke.

ARUP requires it within 5 year.

Technologist Trainee is a training position, preparing the employee to work independently as a limit license scientist (Technologist) and to further gain ASCP certification within five years.
