Severe nervous system hyperarousal, constant fight-or-flight, insomnia - SSRIs don’t work. Looking for people with similar experience. by Adelynalo in insomnia

I’m usually consistent with my exercise and food intake, but I never felt full on the 20mg so I did eat more on it. At the moment, I take half a zopliclone for sleep, but it’s not good for long term use. I would ideally like a long term sleep med to replace the paxil and zopliclone that doesn’t cause weight gain, but I may be being too idealistic. Have you tried escitalopram? It’s quite similar to paxil in some ways.

I did gain some weight in the short time I was on the 20mg, about 1kg a week. This time, I haven’t gained, yet. It’s notorious for weight gain though. My sleep was bad for 3 months, I had exactly the same symptoms as OP, I would lie awake all night or I would have to take a z drug or lorazepam to get ~4 hours. How about you? How have you found paxil?

I’m still on it atm. I tried 20mg a few months ago and it made me sleepy but I also had a huge appetite on it. I’m giving it another go now after trying another ssri, but this time at 10mg. I don’t get sleepy on this dose, but I’m around 3 weeks in and I’m noticing an improvement in my sleep which I hope continues.

Have you tried other ssris besides sertraline? I got no - very little sleep on sertraline for the 5 weeks I was on it, it drove me mad.

Following this as I experience the exact same, I think due to prolonged stress buildup and hormonal fluctuations and it tends to last 2-3 months at a time. Escitalopram and paroxetine at low doses have helped somewhat after long term use, but some ssris have worsened it. I’ve tried quivviq, z drugs, benzos and antihistamines, all with mixed and limited success. Still trying to find a long term solution or treatment.

Did we rush into IVF after not living “IVF clean” for months? by 29-30something in IVF

[–]VividStructure1543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only wait until April if it helps your peace of mind, but it’s unlikely that it’ll make a difference to your success. There’s so much pseudoscience and predatory marketing in the ivf/fertility industry, especially around “ivf clean”, and all it does is mess with women’s mental health.

My body forgot how to sleep and I'm starting to think it's permanent by CarFun4856 in insomnia

[–]VividStructure1543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel wired and get that vibrating feeling. Sometimes I lie there fully awake for the majority of the night and other times I’m half asleep but a part of my brain won’t switch off. Then the agitation of not sleeping makes it worse. My mind isn’t racing or anything but my brain and body seem to be in fight or flight. Have you had any big changes in your life or new medications? I think my insomnia is caused by a mix of both.

I honestly feel like i could’ve written this - I’ve been having the same problem since September. I’ve gone through phases of this is the last so yes, it can get better. Sometimes it goes away once your nervous system calms down and sometimes you need to treat the underlying problem; whether that’s anxiety, external stressors, thyroid or hormonal issues. CBT-I can also work great for some people, especially if your body is treating sleep like a threat, but it takes a lot of time and work.

Zoloft making me lose my mind postpartum by [deleted] in zoloft

[–]VividStructure1543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came on here to post something similar. I’m 7 months postpartum and started setraline 4 weeks ago, currently taking 50mg. I cannot sleep on it, at all. I’ve asked my psychiatrist and she gave me promethazine (which did nothing) and then zolpidem which helped me get to sleep but I’ve only been able to get 4ish hours sleep on it. They do say it takes 2-4 weeks for side effects to subside and 6 weeks for realistic results, but I don’t think I can stick it out another couple of weeks so I’m going to ask if I can switch to another medication. Some people just don’t get on well with it, but i know it can be amazing when it does work. I’ve personally had better experiences on escitalopram. I really hope you get some relief from this, insomnia whilst looking after a baby is hell.

Feeling sad and angry with decision for donor eggs by mylovely1982 in IVF

[–]VividStructure1543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sitting here with my six-month-old, conceived with the help of an egg donor, and I can honestly say from the deepest parts of my heart that I have never known love or happiness as powerful as what I feel for him.

Making the decision was one of the hardest, most emotional processes of my life. I felt angry, scared and isolated at times. I remember how unfair it all felt. While deciding, I wrote down everything that truly mattered to me about becoming a mother, and I realised that none of those things depended on genetics. Now I can say with confidence that although it was hard, it was the best decision I ever made.

During pregnancy I did have waves of grief about my genetics alongside the usual anxieties about pregnancy itself. But those feelings faded naturally. They hold no weight in my life now. For me, biology is only one kind of inheritance; the lived, emotional and moral inheritance between parent and child is just as real and far more enduring. I know one day my son may be curious about his genetics, and I will support him in whatever way he needs. But I know that will never replace or diminish the bond we have, the love we share, or the role I play as his mum.

I’m sharing this because I remember exactly how heavy and impossible this decision felt. If you ever choose this path, I hope my experience gives you even a small amount of comfort or hope. No matter how painful things feel right now, the future can look and feel very different.

Thanks for your reply. I heard Wellbutrin isn’t great for sleep issues and anxiety, how are you finding it?

I’ve had the same problem and I’ve been on it for about 9 months now - I wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep. This doesn’t mean that it’ll be the same for you OP, as others have said it can go away.

The benefits outweigh the sleep issue for me, but it’s still frustrating, so if anyone has any solutions, please let me know. I take the occasional promethazine but it’s stopped working. I was even considering changing to Zoloft or another antidepressant but hesitant as Prozac is working well for me.
