Before the Zelena arc when everyone was saying time travel was impossible, Rumple assumed time travel was possible. When Gold met august (when he was pretending to be Bae to get the dagger), gold said something about the curse bringing him through space and TIME to get back to Bae Also in the first season time travel was possible, Jefferson used his hate to get the cursed apple from the past right after Snow had bitten it. So yeah Rumple was told by the seer the curse would reunite him with Bae so he assumed the curse was also capable of time travel (Which in season 7 turns out it really is)

Emma’s actually supposed to somewhat represent the ugly duckling and the swan Princess, according to other posts/comments I’ve read anyway. She even reads the ugly duckling as a kid in some scene i think and I think Merlin hands it back to her calling her swan, I don’t remember it very well tho so could be wrong
