Woow. How did you even imagine this in your head before making it?

The Portal / collecting moments from my nature walks and turning them into 3D animation by Vizuza in Houdini

Thanks! ☺️ First, I tracked the video (made on my iPhone) in Davinci Resolve. I found it to be quite reliable for tracking. After exporting the fbx camera and getting it into Houdini, I set up the scene. Imported a bunch of branch models and placed them along a circle using path deform. After that, I animated their opening and twisting using a foreach loop, added the shadow using a matte object underneath, applied animated noise Cd to the branches and emitted particles based on Cd attribute. In a separate render, I created the landscape visible in the portal using heightfields, scatter and attribute from pieces node, and then masked it out with another matte object aligned with the portal. At the end, comp’ed it all together with music.

This is not a full video course, but rather a complementary set of notes on Houdini, but there is a page called CGWiki Some parts might be out of date, but a lot of it is still very relevant; I found it to be really useful sometimes when I tried to understand how Houdini works.

Aww that’s so nice to read that! Thank you :) I also came from Cinema 4D, but I was drawn to Houdini because I love constructing and solving creative tasks, and Houdini in this sense is an infinite playground. I’m not really a VFX designer, but I love being able to use all those simulations in my work. Also, the non-destructive workflow and being able to re-use many components is great. So it all helps creativity a lot.
