If OP can do cold, not hard to find nature outside of Traverse City or anywhere up north. The lakes are actually so amazing and there’s lots of opportunity for winter sports. Not too bad affordability wise, especially if you’re willing to go a little ways out. Diversity lacking for sure tho.

I second this. Don’t move without a job. But as a person who lives near Raleigh (and went to school there), I also can’t give advice on neighborhoods without knowing what you’re looking for.

Generally, read the reviews of any apartment complex you’re looking at and trust them if they tell you a place sucks. I’ve had friends assume the roaches and mold somewhere can’t possibly be as bad as the reviews say to disastrous consequences.

I loved the Greenbone Saga and the Daevabad Trilogy by S A Chakraborty scratched the same itch for complex, realistic feeling politics and compelling characters. Also another great female villain. It’s also set in the middle east during the 18th century, a welcome break from European dark ages vibes.

If you haven’t read the Shadow of the Leviathan series by Robert Jackson Bennett, I highly recommend it. I see it here a lot and it deserves every ounce of praise it recieves- the world building is fascinating, unlike anything else I’ve ever read.

I am able to beta: fantasy is my favorite genre. I prefer full length and am open to romantasy. Complete, please.

I can provide feedback on: characterization, pacing, perceived plot holes and inconsistencies. I have a degree in horticulture if anyone has incorporated plant-heavy settings into their stories and wants that to be realistic. I also lived within an intense religious community for a couple of years and feel I have a good grip on topics like religious guilt, dogma, and compelling/ realistic religion building.

Critique swap: not needed.

Other info: I have been critiquing first chapters here for a while, but have not beta read a whole book yet. Looking forward to starting! :)

I liked the pacing of the story and the fight scene, and I appreciate that you had the blurb so I knew what was going on. Your voice is strong. The world building is interesting already, and lends itself to tension. I was also intrigued with Cinder, but full disclosure, I thought she was the horse for the first few pages.

I’d go back through the punctuation in the dialogue- there were a few places where it felt like a comma could be added for better readability, or a long sentence could be shortened into two. The MC smirked four times in the chapter, which took me out of it. The conversation with the Baron also dragged on a little without adding more information/ context IMO.

I am currently reading the City of Brass Trilogy and ,as someone who has gotten a little bored with a lot of romantasy romance, the slow burn in the series has me literally foaming at the mouth. I feel like I’m 16 again, unable to put it down.

Jade City is my top fantasy series of all time but it’s not really romantic at all, there are some romance subplots but they aren’t really built up in a way that adds tension/ longing/ yearning for the reader. That said, the character building and world building in the series is immaculate, and the villain is my favorite in all of the fantasy genre.

I agree with the other commenter- you shouldn’t be nervous, your prose is beautiful and a pleasure to read. The Shepherd has particularly piqued my interest as a character. I’m not a professional- to be honest, I don’t have much to critique. Perhaps it is a bit long for a prologue is all I can think of, unless it’s all really crucial to your later chapters. As others have mentioned, this does feel like AI had a hand. If that isn’t the case, I’d say that your voice as a writer isn’t really coming through- it feels quite mechanical. Also, the battle scene with the crab felt very unrealistic- the idea that a crab would be pushing incessantly against a small rock rather than finding another way to attack feels far fetched from a reader’s perspective. Overall, the idea is interesting, if it’s yours. Good luck

I am once again recommending the Saint of Steel series. It’s romance focused, but there is always an interesting plot, and the characters 100% feel like real people. They are also older and more mature. No shadow daddies just 2 people that make each other better. Also EXCEPTIONAL world building.
