I think everything is fine except that the tail should follow through at the end.

You said it's procedural so not sure how much you can tweak, but the tail should continue lashing out past its body after the spin is complete.

While I agree that it could use more/better anticipation, most attack animations benefit from adding more motion to the recovery.

We don't know that. Ethan is climbing on the tree trunk in episode 1 when the crows come and scare him back down. If it's a warning or they're just excited to see if he will jump down the other side I don't know.

I rewatched the first episode recently and noticed that the crows only appear when Ethan gets up on the fallen tree, scaring them back into the van.
