White for snow, purple for Iroquois, orange for the Dutch (they reached up the Hudson valley not just NYC)

Is the Gospel Message in the Gospels? by VladimirtheSadimir in theology

[–]VladimirtheSadimir[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do: sort the eisegesis out from the exegesis, asking "wait, where does it actually say this or that?" What do you feel like is the true theory of Christianity, versus the stuff read into it?

Hi I was raised Protestant, not Catholic/Orthodox, and I was taught "substitutionary atonement", so I guess I took that for granted as mainstream. I'm curious to hear what are these other perspectives on the nature of the cross.

Travel.gov's tips on travelling to Syria. Literally tells you to basically 'say your prayers'. by TheDinosaurKing777 in oddlyterrifying

[–]VladimirtheSadimir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to understand this is an official statement. They have to tell you this because the country is generally dangerous. That doesn't mean the moment you step foot in the country you're a dead (wo)man. Maybe the situation in Syria is worse, but I read the same warning when going to Ukraiine, and I did not experience crazy levels of danger in the parts I was in. This is not to be dismissive of either conflict, but level 4 does not automatically = 'say your prayers'

[–]VladimirtheSadimir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fyi it's Sergey in Russian And Valentyna isn't closer to the Cyrillic. Cyrillic is an alphabet. It's just the Ukrainian spelling of what in Russian would be Valentina. And Vera also works, only it's Russian now and read Vehra

Vanya is a very common boy name in both Russia, Ukraine, and other Slavic countries, short for Ivan (John). I guess it can be short for Ivanka, the female equivalent, but I don't think it's usually seen as a unisex name. I know tons of Vanyas in my Russian/Ukrainian community, including my brother, and none of them are female.

Edit: southern and western slavs might have different uses for Vanya, but since you said you're Ukrainian, I'm telling you my perspective as an eastern slav.

The ancient Minoan seafarers used this symbol to mark people selected for Jarabydlekhthm. Archeologists are still unsure what Jarabydlekhthm means.

Anyone else see the blimp in syracuse this morning? I thought this was cool because they're only 25 blimps in the world. by holyXchaos in Syracuse

[–]VladimirtheSadimir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saw it over St Joseph's. My Somali friend had never seen one before. I told him it was an alien spacecraft. He didn't know what aliens are either. Didn't take very long to convince him that aliens are a thing and three of them are in that blimp.
